I like him! He is a blowhard but that makes him interesting, it's not like I have to deal with his crazy personality on the daily, I just listen to his songs.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

The only thing good are his samples...
His beats arent original or innovative as the neptunes in their early period...
Hell even WilliAm is a better producer than kanye... more original too

And his raps are lackluster and pretty much unoriginal...

I hear all that you are sayng but...

Kanye is special because of one reason:

He has the power to make people like me , my folkie brother and my heavy metal loving boyfriend, who never listen to hip hop buy his albums, listen to them and actually like them.

Very few if any other hip hop artists have that appeal.

You have to respaect the man's work, for that reason alone.

Grrr edits suck

No, you don't have to respect Kanye West's music simply because he has a certain crossover appeal. If anything, that's more of a testament to how watered-down and generic he is.

Basically, Kanye West is for the past few years what P-Diddy was from 1995 through 2002 -- namely, generic, commercialized stereotypes of rap music watered-down for even the unhip to say, "I don't dig rap music, but I dig HIM."

But trax like Addiction, Celebration, Late, Crack Music, Never Let You Down go in more depth than pop though. THat's the thing. The album traks get alot more personal. The Roots and stuff are ok..but they should stop trying so hard to be different.

The harder they try the harder they fall away from ears. Just like Common's Electric Circus..in which I thought was a good album...I couldnt convince my brother to listen to it. So why should record companies waste more money making an album than the sales themselves. Common smarted up and hooked up with Kanye wto make him more recognized...now he doing commercials and people are all of a sudden interested in him again....and is he pop? NO....but he smarted up and quit tryin so damn hard.

This is off topic, but Y was Mos Def last album without a cover ??? What the hell? Savin money or some shit?

He's okay, and I like that his subject matter is different than most artists these days, but you'd think from his attitude that he's walking on water or something.

And his expectations with regards to winning awards tells me he's kind of an idiot. Who expects MTV to give awards to the BEST music? Even the Grammys doesn't always give the award to the best.

Get over yourself Kanye!

Ya, know I love to read, but I don't read dostoevsky everyday.

Sometimes fluff is good.

Exactly, why is there even a thread on here about this at all????

If you don't like the man, then don't buy his music, let the ones who do like his music and his talent enjoy it.

It's that simple.

Complaining about an artist is just a waste of breathing air.

Oh, no complaining. I just said that he's a worthless blowhard. I still stand by that statement. I also stated that he's a talentless hack. I also stand by that statement. I also said that he sounds like a dork when he's rapping. I would actually like to take that back and replace it with "I think he sounds like a HUGE dork when he's rapping".

I made one thread about Kanye and his blowhardness. I'm not spending my lifetime trying to explain it or anything. Just made a point, posted an article, and that was that. I just expressed my opinion... not trying to make this into a college thesis or anything... shrug

You do understand i don't hate Kanye?
I just merely dislike his music...
Everything is a matter of perception and the internet is the forum of discussion...
I'm an open miinded cat who likes to express my opinions.
Though it may clash with others... thats bound to happen...
But i never mean anyy disrespect...
In all reality of my musical politics i DO NOT LIKE POP MUSIC...
Not in that non-conformist way...
I just think its formuliac in unartistic...
Its my opinion that the sole goal of pop music is to release swill amongst the masses to gain money...
Its musical capitalism at its finest... Just look at the 50 and kanye beef...
Two swill merchants beefing on who can sell the most records...
I've always said that music aintt about selling records...
Thats just the business aspect of MUSIC BUSINESS...
Music is art... and pais i know you feel the same way...
cause we're both ecletic like that
were we differ is that you automatically praise something you like...
Which is cool, i'm just critical like that...
I look or i like people who don't kow tow to the mainstream...
Because thats the way i am...
Kanye is mainstream, In the way that he's convincing people that hes doing something different when hes not...
Hes just doing what everybody did 10 15 years ago, and NOW its new...
hes a retro leach...

Whereas the roots, as you say try too hard to be different...
But they still are different and you know its apart of their beiing...
Like Mos Def who parades around new york playing gigs with a live big band...
He's just generally different...
ANd i admire that... Thats a hard thing to find in a rapper/musician...
Cause mos def in my opinion is a lyrical musician...
Meanwhile you got Kanye...
Who's fun, makes somewhat cool beats that appeals to everybody,
You can dance to him...
Giggle at his sophmoric rhymes...
And its fine...

But he aint an artist in my eyes...
He's just another egomaniacal industry beat puppet...
The likes that Dre became and now Timbaland...
Nothing wrong with Pop music... or Hip pop...
so if you like it cool, we are slaves to our taste...
But an invisible line exists...
Between mainstream and what i like to call "Whoa"
Mainstream everybody likes...
"Whoa" in 20 years Everybody will like its and respect it...
2 Pac was mainstreaam Wheras Makaveli was "Whoa"

Remember the time was Mainstream wheras Stranger in Moscow was "Whoa"
Purple Rain was Mainstream whereas Sign O The Times was "Whoa"
Kanye West Mainstream while Mos Def ... "Whoa"

Some people go through their lives engulfed in the mainstream and love it...
Others search for the Whoa...
Nothing wrong with each path as long as you're happy
but their is always room for discussion

clapping This is one of the most intelligent posts I've ever read here on the Org! As an artist myself, I feel the same way! wink
