Ooh chile... you must have heard about he and Eddie... LOL! There goes another Whitney connection.

I swear that trick is like the Yoko Ono of New Edition. lol

Wendy Williams: "Were you involved in the break-up of New Edition (1996-97 reunion)?"
Whitney: (irritatingly) "I didn't even know him then!"
Wendy: "No I meant when they were on the reunion tour."
Whitney: (sighing relief) "No they had their own relationship."

lol That trick probably had something to do with it though.

The rest of New Edition: "Don't marry Whitney, you'll regret it."
Bobby: "Fuck y'all, you don't know about love."

15 years later:

The rest of New Edition: "Now didn't we tell your dumb ass..."
Bobby: "Yeah I know, I know, I fucked up."

lol

Naw i think Bobby brown success was way more surprising, talk about a man who could have had a crazy success story, from getting kicked out of the group to upstaging and then co headlining the same tour with them, to even going on to bigger success in 89, too bad he married Whitney and got caught up in drugs, and he was just a back up singer

No, because Bobby Brown already was a solo act who had a No. 1 single ("Girlfriend") before "Don't Be Cruel" came out. In addtion, he was the co-lead on one of New Edition's biggest hits, "Mr. Telephone Man."

What were Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronald DeVoe known for, besides being backup singers? Most people considered them the Tito Jacksons of the group and when they announced they were going to be a recording act themselves most people laughed. NO ONE expected them to have an album like "Poison!" and all the success it had (not to mention being one of the first albums that fully merged rap and soul music).

If I'm not mistaken, each portion of New Edition score a number one hit on the R&B charts away from each other:
Bobby had like five or six, I'm not too certain.
Ralph had one
Johnny had two
BBD had two

They were all successful with their solo/side projects. Not even the Jackson 5 could own up to that shit!

bboy87 said:

But J5 comes pretty close:
The Jackson 5/Jacksons- 26 Top Pop, 30 Top 40 R&B
Jackie- 1 Top 40 R&B
Jermaine- 7 Top 40 Pop, 21 Top 40 R&B
Marlon- 1 Top 40 R&B
Michael- 40 Top 40 Pop, 41 Top 40 R&B

C'mon, the only reason it seems comparable is because of Michael's blinding success and Jermaine had a 15-plus year run as a good, but not great, solo act. MJ is the only one of the Jackson 5/Jackson enclave who had a platinum album as a solo act; Jermaine scored two gold albums in his career (1980's "Let's Get Serious" and 1984's self-titled album).

Each member of New Edition had a platinum album, and Ralph Tresvant was the only who didn't have a multi-platinum album:

* Ralph Tresvant (self-titled album)
* Bobby Brown (7 million for "Don't Be Cruel," 2 million for "Bobby")
* Bell Biv DeVoe (4 million for "Poison!," gold album for "Hootie Mack")
* Johnny Gill (2 million for his self-titled album, gold albums for "Provocative" and "Let's Get the Mood Right")

The only other popular music group I can think of where every member (minimum three members) had a platinum album as a solo act is The Beatles. That tells you what New Edition did was very unique.

Exactly. In addition to being immensely popular, New Edition were front-runners in a lot of respects in popular/soul music. It was their success that started the resurge in teen-age acts from the mid-1980s through today. Acts like Boyz II Men, New Kids On The Block, N'Sync, Five Star, Hi-Five and many current acts are direct derivations of the N.E. formula. Even acts like SWV were inspired by New Edition.

As a solo act, Bobby Brown may have been the first soul act in the modern time to cross over to white audiences without "whitening his style." There likely would not have been large mainstream success for acts like Usher if it wasn't for B. Brown.

Bell Biv DeVoe was arguably the first true soul act to merge successfully hip-hop beats and productions into a soul music environment. You mentioned TLC as being a direct descendant/female answer to BBD, but I feel some of the rap acts' ability to find white fans with more accessible styles owe some of their success to the "Poison!" album.

New Edition doesn't quite get the respect it deserves for having such an impact on soul and pop music for the past quarter-century.

Yep, their story's actually uplifting. Five guys from the Boston ghettos arose to be superstars even though they've all had problems. I sense a happy ending to their story unlike the DeBarges (which I also hope they get it together too).

Wasn't 1990 a great year? biggrin I think "Poison" was the biggest-selling album by an R&B group that year (I forgot how much En Vogue's "Born to Sing" sold, lol). I think it did like five million worldwide.

And yeah, BBD's success was unexpected. It was actually perfect since Michael, Ricky and Ronnie never stood out of the crowd the way Ralph, Bobby and Johnny did so for them to form a splinter group was perfect.

And though they don't get the credit they get, BBD were the precursor to TLC. It's like Mike was Left-Eye (the rapper), Ronnie was T-Boz (while not much of a singer, he did sing and rap) and Ricky was Chilli (obviously the "sanger" in the group). They were the original group with the mixture of hip-hop, R&B and pop or whatever their slogan was at the time.

TLC took that concept and ran with it.

I'm glad to see New Edition gettin' some love. They are definitely in my Top 5 favorite artists list. I saw them live (sans Bobby) and they definitely put on slammin' show. I hope they do get back together (with Bobby) like the rumors are saying.

Big ups to Vainandy who also appreciates "My Secret" cause that is my JAM!!!!! Nobody mentioned "Delicious" or "Maryann" from that album. Come on, ya'll know that those are the joints right there.

While I love Heartbreak (Especailly N.E. Heartbreak, Competition and "You're not my kind of Girl) I really think that New Edition is a better album. The songs on that one are a lot more cohesive and there's less filler on there, too. (With the exception of Baby Love). It's really bubblegum pop, but for this genre I think it's extremely well produced and singing is definitely on point.

My favorites are:

Candy Girl (12 Inch)
Popcorn Love
My Secret
Cool It Now
Is This The End
Jealous Girl
Lost In Love
Mr. Telephone Man

I hated their third album though. It may have been a Jam and Lewis production but all the songs were too mellow. Bobby Brown's solo stuff like "My Prerogative" was much harder and more my speed.

Thats The Way We Livin was tight music

Anyway as the biggest NE Fan on here.....NEW EDITION IS THE BEST group since J5.

Always start with the "New Edition" album..then "Candy Girl" "Ne Heartbreak" the rest u can get only if you really like them to a point, but those albums have their biggest hits on them.

I've been looking all over for their second album with no luck. I have three 45s from that album but I don't have "My Secret" which I want but I don't want to buy their greatest hits CD. I saw their second album on CD a few years ago but I guess they have made it out of print now.

I've noticed more and more albums going out of print as more greatest hits compilations are made. I can't find one damn Ohio Players album on CD in the record stores these days.
