See, here's why I say she's not cutting it. Take Heartburn. Its up-tempo but its not that great. I've seen that youtube version and the live version from her DVD and its not that impressive. She hit on a little something with "Karma" but most of her singles have been ballads where she gets to show off her piano playing a little. That's all fine and good for a couple of songs but then you gotta come with it. She hasn't. Look at Van Hunt. You can go through his 2nd CD and by the end of it you will say "Why isn't any of this on the radio?" and you feel cheated as a music consumer. You go through Alicia's CD and you get what you expect - and that's bad. For someone who has been hyped so highly, you get mediocre CDs. Yes, she's talented. That's not at question. Being talented and having lackluster songs still makes you suck.

I find it funny that people still can't get over what the record labels claimed Alicia to be six years ago. I guess she'll never live that hype down.

Van Hunt is mostly a guitar player. In general, their music is a little more lively than piano players. It would be fair to compare her to another piano player, I'd assume.

I personally do find some of her songs lackluster aswell, but as I brought up before, her music seems to lack color. That's why I've always wanted her to collaborate with Andre 3000, to atleast bring a little umph out of her since Timbaland didn't.

Unless she picks up another instrument, I don't think we'll hear anything too funky.

Hey, I just sited Van Hunt as an example. Let's look at someone like Leela James, then. She doesn't play piano (that I know of); sh's just a singer. Given the spotlight, she drops "Good Time" and "Music" - more moving songs than anything Alicia has put out. Her hype is not six years ago - its been consistent. To me, she's just not cutting it any way you slice it. Without comparing her to anyone, on the merits of her own songs, she's kinda boring. I have hope for her because I see potential but I'm calling it like I see it as it stands right now. I have to struggle to remember her songs. That means they have not left a lasting impression on me - even after media bombardment. She just needs to step her game up.

I have to disagree on the piano thing- theres a lot of unique keyboard sounds that she could play- I'd so like to hear some clav work from her, and other synth sounds from her. Maybe she doesn't have uptempo in her

Agreed. Diversification/Flexibility as an artist is essential and that hasn't been exhibited thus far.

I typed a response but it didn't go through somehow.

I was basically saying that it's not fair to compare newer artists to older artists because they'll never measure up. Back then, the media wasn't used as a tool to distract people from real matter of the world and life in general. If all the news covered was the war in Iraq, the economy, the AIDS epidemic, and so on...we would see a change in music just from that. Instead we have MTV, BET, VH1 ,E and so many other channels that are strictly catered to entertainment. You can't compare.

Back to Alicia I think heartburn, karma, girlfriend, mr. man, jane doe, an old track called rearview mirror and a few others are more uptempo.
