Whatever happened to Martika

I was just curious about what she was doing now. Remember the Prince produced Love thy will be done? She seems to be the forgotten Prince collaborator. Have not seen her for what must be about 15 years.

"Whatever happened to Martika?"

The same thing that happens to most of Prince's female proteges. After the collaboration, they fade away into oblivion.Remember Ingrid Chavez? Remember Elisa Fiorillo? What about Jill Jones and Deborah Allen?

Working with Prince is almost like a curse lol

Martika wasn't a prince protege though...She had her own world going and then used two prince penned songs...totally different then the other girls you mentioned.

This is in the wrong forum. Martika's biggest hit "Toy Soldiers" came out way before her Prince association. She's also far too talented to be a Prince protege. Not a good songwriter or anything, but a really good performer. I have some old footage of her performing with her band back in 1991, and it's a revalation if you think of her as just some fluffy pop product. She was a really underrated live artist. It's a shame the pendulum had swung so far away from live performance in the late 80s (for female artists) that that side of her was kept under wraps.

Any chance of getting this moved to the Music: Non Prince forum? Just 'cos the man produced some tracks for her doesn't mean she should be consigned to the org ghetto alongside Vanity and Carmen Electra.

Dropped to page 3 already! Damn, might as well have left her in the ghetto. She ain't making out too good here in the mainstream.

Her two big hits before Prince didn't really sound like him. Anyone else remember "More Than You Know"? Very much in the early Madonna vein.

I know. This thread started out in the Associated Artists forum which is why I said it was in the wrong place. btw, I don't feel the poster's initial question has been answered. What happened after 1991? Did she get dropped? Did she record anything else before this goth thing? I actually had tickets to see her perform in 1992, but the tour was cancelled. I always suspected it was due to poor ticket sales although I never heard any explanation.

I have always loved the song Martika´s kitchen.

That first Oppera CD, 'Violince', is AWESOME!!! The second one didn't thrill me over. But it's Tika so I had to buy it. The only thing goth about Oppera is their clothes and make-up, The music is very pop with a dash of melodic '80s metal. I've been in love with Martika since her "Kids Inc." days. Around 2000, an albums worth of Tika tunes were leaked onto the internet. I don't know why she dropped out of sight for so long. Working with Prince seems to have that effect on a lot of careers. hmm But I'm glad she's resurfaced.

Yeah, I think that and Love Thy Will Be Done are two of the best songs Prince ever wrote for another artist. Even though she seems to have fallen prey to the Associated Artists Curse I still don't think it was a mistake to work with P, just because the two tracks he gave her were so damn good.
