You know, one could make the case for Kelvin Mercer (Plug 2) over Dave (his verse on "Much More" might be the single greatest verse of the last 10 years), but this list is pretty airtight.

My list didn't deviate much; I added LL because the case can be made that he's still the prototype by which most MC's are still built. Guru, Brother J and Tip, hard to argue them.

Now, if MF Doom makes a few more neo-classics along the lines of Madvillainy and MM..Food, he could crack that list.
[Edited 9/24/07 9:50am]

K-Merc is in the top 15-20 easily. I saw your list and it was a nice one but you know I ain't feelin' Biggie bro lol . And I'd put MF on the top 12.

Indeed. Accurate assessment.

4real, Kim is the hotness. I like MC Lyte, but I really didnt like rap until Lil Kim. She was the first rap artist that i ever had an interest in buying. And is that a problem 4 me NOT to be 30 years old?
If you're under 30, you should never compile a top 10 MC list. Case closed

Excuse me but I wasnt born in the 70's. Yea I know and have songs by the likes of Roxanne Shante, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Moe Dee, I even got the Treacherous Three's first Lp, my cousin is MC Shan and was in a commercial with KRS One, but it's not my fault I don't really know alot about them growing up to have heard every album they did.

MC Shan is your cousin ??? eek eek eek For real ? eek

I used to listen to his Down By Law album a lot when it came out in 86...he was one of my favorite rappers...but I was too much of a BDP/KRS1 fan and I couldn´t really forgive him for claiming that HipHop started out in Queens.

So is your family really part German, as Shan would sometimes say in interviews ?
He used to say that General Moltke was one of his ancestors ( his real name is Shawn Moltke , right ?)
General Moltke is not unknown to me, since I am of Turkish origin and General Moltke used to work for the Turkish army back in nineteenhundredsomething...he was a General of the Ottoman Empire´s army back when Germany and Türkiye were allies against Russia and England.

Are you REALLY Shan´s cousin ? Talk about six degrees of seperation lol ...

He is my father's nephew..so wouldnt that make me his cousin? I have a picture of him in the 70's at a Christmas Party I should put up.

The first time I rememebr thinkin he was LL, cuz he had the Kangol hat. He came in our room and gave us a 12" of "Jane Stop This Crazy Thing" and a dollar each. I had to be no more than 5. And he said he wanted us to be good and stay in school n stuff lol Somebody stole that autographed record though...

The last time I spoke to him his daughter had died and he was trying to move out of NYC...he had stayed in Long Island I believe.

Too bad that his daughter died so young...may she rest in peace..that is really, really sad....

Last time I heard of him was way back in the early 90s, when he produced Snow´s "Informer"....he must have gotten a lot of royalties for that hit ! I felt kinda happy for him to be so successful again, but the loss of his daughter is really tragic, he always came across as a genuinely nice and positive person and I stil have Down By Law on cassette.

PS; many other people also got him mixed up with cool J because of the Kangol hat.

Informer, yeah I didnt actually know that was him that produced that until my mom bought it and told me she only really liked it cuz he made it.

I actually dont even own any of his songs other than "Jane!.." "Left Me Lonely" and "The Bridge". He would be highly upset with me if he knew that nod When he called and asked if we saw him on the Sprite commercial in 95 I said, "No." He blew a fuse...little did I know I had been seeing that commercial over and over not knowing it was him. The Hat, look and claiming Queens was probably the most LL comparison.

I could say that you've unfortunately missed out on a lot.

But I could also say that you were fortunate to have missed out on a lot more.

So it's a wash.

Clearly, though, you love your hip-hop.

The all East Coast version . . . I can dig it. But Rakim No. 5? Really?

Yeah, CL WAS kinda high, especially over The R, but his list in its entirety was tight.

My reason for listing CL that high is mecca and the soul brother. He was the star MC of the east coast during the time west coast rap took over and mecca and the soul brother is probably my all time favorite hip hop album. A lot of these lists i respect. It was hard for me to leave ice cube off the list. I should have put him on honorable mention too. I think he was by far the best MC on the west coast and could definitely be in my top 10 anyday.

I don't know if CL was the ONLY East coast MC holdin' it down during the West's reign, but I feel you to some extent. I'd have to throw in ATCQ holding it down in that same period.

And the best MC on the west around that time - and probnab;y perios - WOULD have been The DOC but that "sold-his-soul-to-the-devil-and-the-devil-collected-that-night" car accident ended that real quick.

DOC was on the verge of being the dopest rapper, regardless of style and coast. His single is blowing up and his star is rising, then he gets into a car accident and the ONLY thing that happens to him is his vocal chords get PERMANENTLY damaged and his career as a rapper is pretty much over.

Now if that's not selling your soul for some quick success - to have the ONE THING that makes you popular and earn ya paper taken away from you in a freak accident - then I don't know what is. In fact, Snoop should thank the fuck outta the DOC everytime he sees him, because had DOC not gotten his chords jacked, there would have been no need for Dre to go out and find Snoop.
