Patti LaBelle started dancing with the man, and she made a snappy comeback to get a response from the audience. She wasn't expecting a response back from the man, who got a bigger response from the audience. Then she plays the diva role, because she had to have the last word and she didn't want to be upstaged.

IMO, Patti LaBelle went into damage control mode because realized that she was coming off as a diva, plus the audience realized she was being too way serious over a situation she initiated. As awkward as that situation was, it could have been worse for LaBelle if the audience turned on her.

It was funny for LaBelle when the guy was being clowned for his singing and she can make a joking comment that he was all up on her, but when he made a snappy joke in the same vein in which she was joking she turns into a self-righteous diva.
