Was Elvis Presley Overrated?

Okay---I went on this website for this rock band that I like (wont say the name, all I'll say is that its a very well known English rock band that disbanded about 27 years ago) anywho...I went into this thread about Britney Spears performers...and I dont know why I did this, but I said that Britney Spears (along with Elvis Presley) are the two most overrated artist in US history....yeah, I went a little over the top, and lord and behold, so many people told me off, I was just sitting in my computer seat like WTF? I dont have a right to my own opinon? While I do know for a fact that Elvis did put rock and overrall pop music into the mainstream, I just think he was a bit overrated...I was telling them to please respect opinion...but they kept bashing me and bashing me...

This one guy told me that Elvis wasnt overrated but overexposed...they were all saying that if it wasnt for him, popular music wouldnt even be where it is right now...and while I do agree that he did help out in that area...he just wasnt all that amazing to me??? Any comments??

he is where he is for a reason.

You are entitled to have your opinion, in particular when it comes to music. Everyone does.

As for Elvis being overrated, yes, I think so by some. And underrated by others.

After all, he was just a man, not a god.

That is an estimate. No one knows for sure how many records he has sold. But I am sure he is the single most commercially successful popular musician and entertainer in modern music.

Its so intresting that you say this. I heard Elvis didnt like being called 'The King.' That he always used to say that Jesus was the King. I think that was very humble of him to say that, and a lot of artist with bloated azz egos need to take a note, and be humble like that (Kanye West), etc.

When people were trying to get Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday as a holiday, the counter arguement by MANY was "If MLK should get a holiday, Elvis should, too"
If that's not overrated, I don't know what is.
America is and has always been celeb-obsessed. Most celebrities are overly cherished. They are just entertainers but they get worshipped like gods. This site is a perfect example of that on many, many, many occasions.

That is so embarrassing that people would argue for an Elvis holiday. I think that is what irks me the most: his fanbase and the white mainstream media's deification of him. He was a brilliant entertainer and one of the significant figures in modern popular music. But I wonder: if he was a person of color (African or Asian-American), would he still be idolized to the degree that he is?

Well there are a lot of Elvis haters on this site, simply because he was white, so I'm sure you'll have no shortage of people who agree with you and can't wait to tell you so.

Enjoy!

It depends on what you value. He just sang songs in (my opinion) a very distinct style. He didn't write songs or play instruments well. He performed very well.

That puts him in the company of older performers like Sinatra, or younger performers like Whitney Houston. Personally I prefer artists like The Beatles who wrote & played their own stuff, but I like the old singers, too, like Ella & Billie.

It's all just opinion & taste.

Yeah, and piano, but neither very well like, say Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis.

Thats all I'm saying...thats why I call him a bit overrated...not saying that he was bad at all...I'm just saying that their were other rockabilly musicians, black and white, who should have gotten just as much attention as Elvis. I guess he just got lucky. Gotta strike when the iron is hot I guess??

Definitely, he was lucky, handsome, talented, and overrated. A solid singer & performer who had very fortunate timing. But there's a reason he's who he is and not Jerry Lee Lewis or Johnny Cash. He was a sex symbol.

I don't think Elvis was overrated. He may not have wrote his own songs, but he was an amazing talent. An awesome singing voice, cool dance moves and magnetic stage presence.

What I feel is that Elvis is overrated in that far more talented artists came along after Elvis. Artists could also write their own songs and where just as goor or better live than Elvis, and haven't spent their career's covering other peoples songs like Elvis did.

Elvis was the first major pop star, but he's not the greatest/most talented.
