The Clash

Anyone else here a fan? I can't get enough of this band. Been a fan forever and love em just as much now as I did back in the early 80s. That 1st album is so rockin its just insane.

Give em Enough Rope,
London Calling,
Sandanista!,
Combat Rock

Man I miss these guys.

Anyone ever hear some of Joe Strummers stuff just before he died? Streetcore is as good as any of the Clash's albums.

What is your fave album/song?

Mine...yes 1st album...Janie Jones & Career Opportunities.

Yeah, I agree the first album rocks the hardest. "Career Opportunities" is probably my favourite from that one. London Calling would've made a great single album. I hated Sandanista, though it had one song title that Prince must have liked... "Let's Go Crazy" lol

The first Clash song I heard was Tommy Gun and from then on I was a fan. Other favourites are:

White Riot
London Calling
English Civil War
Bankrobber
This Is Radio Clash

IMHO not too many people listen to the Sex Pistols nowadays, but the Clash made good music that has stood the test of time.

The Clash were like a new Beatles for me, they went from a new, exciting, simple sound to creating their own eclectic hybrid of creative music, yet never lost their essence or their edge. But they imploded way too early (even earlier than the Beatles young demise).

London Calling is one of my top albums ever. Not a single dud on it. I particularly like:

Brand New Cadillac
Hateful
Rudy Can't Fail
Death or Glory

Even Cut the Crap has some decent songs, though it sounds like absolute "crap" ironically. I can't really call that the Clash, however.

B.A.D. had some decent stuff, too. I'd like to check out soe of Strummer's solo stuff, but haven't yet.

I just saw this girl on Letterman (M.I.A.maybe?) and her entire musical track was the guitar intro to Straight to Hell set to a drumbeat.

I agree with your comment about the Sex Pistols. However The Clash were always more than just a punk band. The Clash could actually PLAY their instruments and Strummer/Jones were excellent songwriters.

yeah, the Sex Pistols were more punk, and they were great, but I find it harder to sit and listen to more than a few of their songs without getting a little bored.

The Clash was much more complete, musically.

Another great about The Clash was that they did good covers of reggae music without trying to sound black. But because they obviously appreciated the music, it sounded sincere. It was probably thanks to them that I discovered reggae.

I was about to say something similar myself biggrin

Being a huge reggae fan, I really appreciate the fact that The Clash did such a cracking job making good reggae music but at the same time making it distinctively UK, white punk. For this reason I personally think their best single was White Man in Hammersmith Palais - what a tune!

I don't like Combat Rock much though - everything up until then was pure quality but for me they had gone far too commercial by Combat Rock, though I used to love Should I Stay or Should I Go as a kid.

The Clash is how I got into raggae as well. That is just one of the reasons why I like the 1st album so much. Its got the speed and attitude of a punk record but sprinkles it with raggae throughout. Brilliant!

True, but there were some great tunes, like Straight to Hell & Know Your Rights, along with the big hits.
