Anyone who denies there is such a thing as a white sounding voice and a black sounding voice is just retreating to some fantasyland in their own head. It's dishonest quite frankly.

They both get a thumbs down from me neutral

Leela sounds uninspired and contrived like diet-soul
and Joss Stone turns my stomach with her whiny howl

You've missed a lot of points made, but stick to the black/white sound argument if you must. neutral

Oh, I'm making no comment on Leela James since I've never heard her. It just seemed like some people took offense at the very idea of a black or white sound. As for Joss I do think she sounds black, but that's a totally different thing from whether or not she's actually good. Mary J Blige sounds black and she's also shit (when singing live that is). I do think Joss had some potential for a while though, but I think she's too far into her star bubble now to ever fulfill that potential.

Leela and Joss ain't trying to sound like no color, they sound like themselves. They just happen to both be influenced by soul music.

Joss Stone tries hard to sound black. She's British, have you ever heard the british accent ???

She sings with a strange accent that seems to be an attempt to emulate african american accent....

Joss Stone tries hard to sound black and she really sounds FAKE.

Leela James sounds white to me.

Yeah, I know what you mean about that strange accent. I think, given time, she could smooth that out, but she's in the worse possible situation to develop. The best thing for her would have been to toil away in obscurity until her mid 20s. Then she could have come to understand her art a bit better. As it is she's totally on her superstar trip, and that means she'll never fulfil her potential.

The first time I saw her perform in early 2004 I was knocked out. She was such a natural performer, but I never saw such a great performance from her again. It seems the bigger she got, the more self indulgent and over-excited her performances became. The same thing happened with Whitney Houston. I've seen Whitney give some great performances, but it seems the bigger the occasion, the more over-excited she'd get, and the worse the performances would be.

A ho? She's had two boyfriends in four years and suddenly she's a ho? By those standards I guess I must be a ho too. And what about you? Or do you just snuggle up in bed with a hot water bottle and a cup of cocoa every night?

Well, she strained her voice around mid-2004 and you've been hearing the cracks ever since, but I was thinking much more about the physical performance, the expressions, the gestures, moves, etc. She was bad. I've still got the performance on VHS, but like I say, I was disappointed with every performance after that.

This is the best performance I can find from her earlier days on Youtube. She's got great confidence here, but not that "patting myself on the back while I'm meant to be working" kind of confidence that ruins so many of today's performers.

Yes, black people and white people do have different sounding voices....why is this so controversial when someone says "she sounds black", or "he sounds white"? I have a close friend in the music business, and when they hear demo tapes of various singers you better believe they will say things like "she sounds black", "he sounds black" She's trying to sound black" "she need more soul" etc. Damn, it seems like we can't even talk straight anymore without all of this politically correct stuff.

Joss has a great voice. I nearly bought her last disc, after writing her off earlier as a Spice Girl who could sing (with apologies to Mel C.) redface

But I prefer Leela because her voice moves me, takes me somewhere. But, more important, she seems to have more to say.

I like Joss Stone.I think she has potential. So far,I haven't been compelled to buy any of her music, but I'll keep an eye on her.

Leela James is good too,but again, she hasn't impressed me enough to make me go out and buy her CD.

Thank you. Pointing this out should not be controversial.
