I was just listening to their eponymous debut earlier today. Great instru-funk. So, anyone of y'all heard about these cats? It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

who the funk is stuff? What u know bout some baby Huey? I'm hip to Huey. I got his album. The irony in it, of course, is that the band releases an album titled 'Living Legend', and Huey dies a week or two after it's release His backing band, the Babysitters, changed their name to Goliath and got a new vocalist, the 18-year-old Chaka Khan [Edited 10/5/07 0:07am] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Stuff is (was) an incredibly gutsy band, whereby the groove was central, rather than individual musician's solo performances. Heavy, heavy R&B roots and for me, the best they produced were the two live albums (Live Stuff - in Tokyo, and Live in New York). (I have both on MP3, but they are hard to get on CD - in Japan they had a HUGE fan base, so you may find some there)
The 'leader' really was Gorden Edwards the bass player. They usually had 2 drummers, Steve Gadd and Chris Parker. The late Richard Tee on keyboards and two guitarists Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree make for incredible funky yet bluesy grooves. STRONGLY recommended listening for those who like Stuff is: Cornell Dupree (he recorded quite a few albums in similar style, with Coast to Coast being the climax) and the Gadd Gang (2 CDs only available through regular channels, but there are a few rare Japanese live recordings, as well as an excellent VHS/DVD recording available). I wish I had a chance to see the original Stuff band myself.... | |
