Why? Only because he arrived earlier than Elvis? rolleyes

No. Some think Little Richard is the greatest performer in rock and roll. Others think that about Elvis. Everyone is entitled to have their opinion in particular when it comes to music and performance.

Of Elvis is overrated, he was white and he sounded a little black - so he was bound to be overrated. However, they ain't no one more overrated than Madonna.

There is a tendency for the very best to be overrated by some. But it's usually deserved. Elvis is overrated. Jimi is overrated. James is overrated. The Beatles are overrated. Stevie is overrated. Bowie is overrated. Prince is overrated. But I can't think of anyone more deserving of being overrated than any or all of those guys.

These threads crack me up...Bottom line is this...He commerically did it 1st!!

It doesn't matter if he stole a "black sound", he was a good looking man, with a good voice and doing something that Jim Nabors, Andy Williams or whatever was playing back in the mid 50's. The youth at that time caught on to it they liked it. period. Elvis should be remembered for that, his music crossed all barriers to pop, country and gosepel. Not many if any "pop stars" are doing that today..

That people is a talent..as "hip-hop" acts like Jay Z cross over to a rock side.

Elvis was not a great song writer/producer, he was an entertainer..that's it, he did not share his opinion on any world events or wars, not like the artists today...

Madonna >>>> Prince, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, James Brown, Sammy Davis nod

All of these no-talents fail when compared to the musical genius of Madonna.

musical genius...i think not...
marketing genius..absoul-fucking-outly!!!!!
The thing about Madonna - she sings ok, acting is ok, songwriting is above average..dancing has slowed down (she is close to 50)but was above average..

thing she has best going for her..she is by far the greatest "business smart" woman in the industry.

I was being facetious in calling Madonna a musical genius.

As for her songwriting skills... With the exception of Lucky Star and a couple of other songs on her first album, I give credit to her collaborators.

But she is a incredible business woman.

I really don't get that Madonna is overrated. After all, there's barely a day that goes by that she isn't completely trashed on the internet and in the media shrug

I bought that one two weeks ago because I wanted "Burnin' Love" and the remix of "A Little Less Conversation". Yeah, it has all the hits.

Hell yeah, he sure was. He was handsome and he dressed sharp as a tack. It's a shame the way he started looking in the 1970s though. Not just gaining weight, but the clothes were an absolute joke. Those white jumpsuits with the cape. He looked like Captain Marvel. lol

I agree. Elvis was gorgeous during the '50s and '60s. Then he became one of the tackiest people in show business.

I'd recommend the 3-CD "Hitstory" box set. it includes 30 #1 Hits, 2nd to None and a 3rd disc of other hits. it's probably the best combo of concise but encompassing the biggest number of hits of any set out there.

not sure when it was released. late 2005, maybe?

there are actually 2 versions. the US version has 19 tracks on the 3rd disc, and the import version has 29. as you can see below, they tracklist for the 3rd disc is wildly different between the two. disc 3 is titled "The Story Continues," btw. no idea why the US disc 3 is so much shorter (and it is, time-wise. like 50 minutes). would have been the perfect set if it'd been filled up, i think.

US
1. I Beg Of You
2. My Wish Came True
3. Ain't That Loving You Baby
4. Fame And Fortune
5. I Gotta Know
6. Flaming Star
7. Follow That Dream
8. One Broken Heart For Sale
9. Kissin' Cousins
10. Such A Night
11. Ask Me
12. Easy Question
13. I'm Yours
14. Puppet On A String
15. Love Letters
16. Seperate Ways
17. Steamroller Blues
18. If You Talk In Your Sleep
19. My Boy

IMPORT
1. Blue Moon
2. Mystery Train
3. Rip It Up
4. Gpt A Lot O' Livin' To Do
5. Trying To Get To You
6. Lawdy, Miss Clawdy
7. Paralysed
8. Party
9. I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone
10. Girl Of My Best Friend

13. Kiss Me Quick
14. Kissin' Cousins
15. Such A Night

It is truly amazing how often this question/topic comes up here. For people under a certain age it is really impossible to discuss the impact of "rating" of a performer, any performer who has been dead for thirty years, and had their biggest period of success fifty plus years ago. If you don't believe it talk to the average young person of today and ask them about Prince, MJ, Madonna or U2, or hell 80's music in general. You might find some who like it, but for the most part they think that those people are at best hasbeens at worst total fucking jokes. But we "know" the truth, because we were there. We know how wonderful it was to watch MJ glide magically across the stage while singing Billie Jean. How wonderful and strange it was to watch "Purple Rain" rain for the first time. We remember Madonna when she was still shocking people on the VMA's because she rocked not because she sucked. The point I am making is that we "know" the truth. So why dont we trust, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, the members of Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Barry Gordy, U2, Madonna, George Michael, Boy George, Billy Idol, Sammy Davis, The Who,...

Hell you get the point... when they say that, as John Lennon stated it so clearly "Before Elvis there was nothing."

Overated? not according to the people on the above list and millions of others who first realized they didn't have to follow in the footsteps of the generations before them after they saw Elvis on Ed Sullivan.

Who are we to judge their experience anymore than the current generation is in a position to understand what "OUR" generation of musicians/performers meant to us.

Ultimately, Elvis' success/impact speaks for itself. The fact that we are still having the argument is just further proof. Elvis changed the world, sold atleast a billion records to date, and currently still has cds and dvds on the charts all over the world. Lets see how well any of our generation of singers are doing thirty years after they are dead...

Peace and lovesexy!!!
