I love The MJG AND Vanity 6. Although The MJG had more hits, "Nasty Girl" will be more remembered than any of the MJG's songs IMO(although they were quite good).

I do have to give the edge to MJG for vocal talent, but Vanity 6 gets my vote in the sexiness, funkyness and fineness departments.

It is interesting to note that the two "fonk pimps" (Rick and Prince) were in direct competition with one another with their respective girl groups. What I don't remember right now is who brought out their group first. I know that Rick tried to answer Prince with Process and The Do-Rags to compete with The Time, but that project was not even close. Anybody remember that? A bit off the subject, I know, but the girl group competition reminded me of this.

I do believe that Vanity 6 came out before The Mary Jane Girls or they both came out at the same time. Don't know for sure.

Vanity/Apollonia funkier then the MJG'S? I don't know about that one. The only funky songs that Vanity/Apollonia 6 made IMO are:

Nasty Girl
If A Girl Answers(Don't Hang Up)
Sex Shooter
A Million Miles
Some Kind Of Lover

While The MJG'S funked it out with:

Boys
Candyman
All Night Long
Prove It
In My House
Wild And Crazy Love
I Betcha
Girlfriend
Break It Up
Leather Queen

It's unlistenable lol Prince should have never put that song on the album.

Didn't know Rick brought out Process and the Doo-Rags. All I remember from that group was the song "Stomp and Shout". Did they do anything else?

I remember Rick talking about putting a group together called Process and the Do Rags but I never knew he actually finished putting them together until I joined the org. The radio stations in my area didn't play anything from them or Val Young (someone else I didn't know about until the internet age).

I prefer the Mary Jane Girls.Vanity 6 was more edgy and experimental, but they were also more "gimmicky".Many people didn't take them seriously. The Mary Jane Girls were a real vocal group...sexy and flirty, but vocally talented as well.

On point. Visually, I ALWAYS dug Vanity6 more than the Jane Girls and actually I prefered the V6 album over anything the Jane Girls released. But yeah, the Mary Jane Girls were definately more talented, vocally.

I think both groups had one member with good vocals, while the others were just pretty faces. Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 had better music, but with JoJo on most leads the MJG gave a better vocal performance.Too bad we did'nt hear more of Brenda , she has a nice voice.

Val Young had an album and single of the same name in 1985 called seduction.
I am only familiar with the single. She later followed in 1987 with a single and album of the same name called private conversation which was basically the same project that rick produced for the mary jane girls that was shelved by motown over legal disputes. The single private conversation got airplay in my area and the album actually was not that bad. I only bought the 12 inch single. I think val young just did not have the pedigree the mary jane girls had and if it weren't for rick's legal problems with motown it more than likely would have been a huge success for the mary jane girls.

It is relative to your taste. But what I really meant was their presence and their demeaner; Vanity 6 exuded funky sexiness, if you can get what I mean, and the song "Nasty Girl" put that in a nutshell. The MJG did have funky songs, but they themselves (save for Maxie)were tamer than V6. I'm not speaking of A6, although I admire Apollonia's beauty.

Yeah because Musically the MJG'S were alot more funkier, but when you have Rick James as your writer, producer, etc..... your supposed to be.

Interestingly, the song "In My House" was originally intended for Val Young to sing.A Motown exec heard it and suggested that Rick give it to the Mary Jane Girls instead. These days,Val is touring with her own version of the Mary Jane Girls,so she now gets the chance to sing it wink

Brenda was the only "real" singer in Vanity 6/Apollonia 6.She was actually in a rock band that released an album in 1974.She was singing long before she met Prince.

The other girls were placed in the group because (let's face it),they were sleeping with Prince lol He was fooling around with Vanity and Susan.

I know this is a Prince fan site but I was wondering does anybody here like the Mary Jane Girls? Back in the 80's , I've listened to the three groups but I have to say , I really like the Mary Jane Girls because they have better music , better stage presence , and better singing voices than Vanity 6 AND Apollonia 6. It's too bad that they didn't go far because they are really good.

It would be nice if we had some Apollonia 6/ Vanity 6 songs in print. I'd buy it in a second. Even if they were just on a compilation album. sad
