MY NIGHT AT THE GRAMMYS (Vote!)

The Recording Academy is opening its video vault with a Web site that allows fans to vote on their favorite Grammy performances over the years. Selected clips will be shown on a television special in November.

Mynightatthegrammys.com, which launches today (Sept. 10), offers 50 video clips of Grammy performances from such artists as Prince, Beyonce, U2, Marvin e, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Kanye West, Elton John, Tina Turner, Madonna and Eminem, among others. Online fans will select their top five choices, with a voting deadline set for Oct. 7.

The top 25 performances that receive the most votes will then be featured on the two-hour "My Night at the Grammys" television special, scheduled to air Nov. 30 on CBS. Along with the video clips, the special will feature artists sharing personal stories about performing at the Grammys, along with behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals and how the show is produced.

Based on the backstory...

There's never been a Grammy save like in March 1998, when Luciano Pavarotti, suffering from a head cold, had to cancel his performance of "Nessun Dorma" just half an hour before he was supposed to go on. Producers knocked on Franklin's dressing room door and asked if she could fill in. Now, there are opera greats who would've taken a pass; after all, the Puccini aria is Pavarotti's signature tune. But an unintimidated Franklin, presented with a tape of Pavarotti's rehearsal as a guideline, nailed the song, blowing the doors off the theater. It was a performance bordering on miraculous, the crowning achievement in a career of a much-honored, much-adored vocal icon who still had something to prove.

...The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin gets my vote.

As much as I respect Aretha Franklin, that performance was OK, nothing more. Still give her props for filling in.

BTW, why is Madonna "Hung Up" and not "Like A Virgin" performance included in the list?

The list is awful.

You can select up to 5 performances.

I agree with Rodya, some performances should've been switched with others. Like I think I would've picked "Billie Jean" for MJ. And that Aretha take did suck balls...I guess it was alright for it being last minute though.

I chose Michael Jackson, Prince and Beyonce, Usher and James Brown, Isaac Pearlman, and Marvin Gaye. The Usher and James Brown one I am not too enthusiastic about, but had to include James Brown.

i didn't care much for the prince/beyonce performance. i also didn't think that was marvin's best performance. actually, most of the selections kinda sucked. lol

really, the best performances out of the bunch were mike, ricky, and christina.

I am not even sure if Michael Jackson performed more than once at the Grammy Awards as a solo artist post-Thriller. All I know of is his '88 performance.

I'm sure Michaels only grammy performance is the one in '88.

The list is awful.

I don't think Madonna has performed at the Grammy awards but twice. Once when Ray of Light was out and then when Confessions came out. The other times, she was either not nominated or lost to someone else.

No. MJ didn't perform when Thriller won all of those awards. I believe he only performed "Man In The Mirror" because Bad was up for several awards (and lost in all categories). If I'm not mistaken, it was after Thriller won all of those awards that the Academy made it a rule that songs nominated in certain major categories had to be performed.

Michael Jackson won the Best Short Music Video award for "Leave Me Alone" in '88. So he did not go empty-handed. But he looked furious that he did not win more. biggrin

While I am not much of a Janet Jackson lover, her performance was better than most of the shit on the list.

But on that particular night, he did. He didn't win the best video award until 1990

That's what makes this performance spectacular, I thought she was amazing and I didn't find out until later that she had stepped up to the plate with a 1/2 hr advanced notice

Wow. I had no idea. I assumed that he won the best music video award that night since Leave Me Alone was on the Bad album. I guess he made the music video for it after the deadline to be considered for the '88 awards.

Aw, poor Mike. No Grammies. biggrin
