It refers to the singing style that developed in the black churches. This term was used to describe black singers who came from the church and their singing style. Lenny isn't either most of the time but has sung in that style (Example "It Ain't Over Til It's Over") I would put prince in this category as well. Not purely a soul singer but can sing in that style. Glad you brought Glover and Kravitz up as it helps to prove the point you can't be called a soul singer just because you are black. Corey Glover's background as a vocalist is CLEARLY gospel. Aside from the fact that he occasionally throws a hymn (acapella) in during sets, when you listen to cuts like "Love Rears Its Ugly Head", you know you don't get those riffs from emulating Areosmith and AC/DC. | |

so that says what? he's not a soul singer because he chose a different genre of music to sing. Now he can switch genre's but you know how fickle the public is he'll have to work hard at it if he wanted to be considered a soul singer.
