Please leave the crack alone. Teena Marie is a real soul singer. Not Kate Bush or Anna Lennox. No one looks at Kate or Annie as soul singers.

Really?

Concerning Kate, she's had props for her soulful voice from the likes of Prince, Maxwell, Stevie Wonder, Tricky, Seal, John Lee Hooker, Terence Trent D'Arby, Lee "Scratch" Perry, B.B. King & Lenny Kravitz among others.

Put down your own crack pipe and do your homework.

So because other artist have covered her songs and given her props that makes her a soul singer ???

I am sure I know a lot more about soul music than you do.
Don't let me pull out my list of great soul singers and embarrass the hell of you. If you think Kate Bush is a soul singer you don't know jack shit about soul music and you do need to check into NA for the crack use(LOL)

Soul basically means to believe in what you are singing. In that respect Kate Bush is "soulful".

Soulful 1 having or expressing or evoking deep feeling. 2 over-emotional.

I think it's time we clear this up and stop reinventing what "soul music" is. To "sing with soul" has nothing to do with how much feeling you are putting into a song. Don't confuse singing with passion as singing with soul. It refers to the singing style that developed in the black churches. This term was used to describe black singers who came from the church and their singing style. The way notes are hit and changes in key is achieved. Not all black singers sing with soul of course. And some white singers have captured this style well but let's not get it twisted as to what the root of soul singing and music is. The black church. Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, and David Bowe have passion but not soul.

Teena Marie is clearly a soul singer. Her style is nothing like those I mentioned above. Maybe my ears are just different but I find it easy to hear a soulful singing style vs a non-soulful style. Real white soul singers sound black. It's that simple. When you hear a Bobby Caldwell, Jon B or Teena Marie on the radio, you think they are black before you see them. That's the true test. I don't think anyone though Annie Lennox was black the first time they heard "Sweet Dreams" on the radio but many though Color Me Bad were all black dudes when they heard "Sex You Up" Hell I though TTD was a white dude when I heard "Wishing Well" so it works both ways.

Not to throw you a curve, 'cause I know this is a BES thread, but is Lenny Kravitz a soul singer? Or, Living Colour's Corey Glover?

Not throwing me a curve at all. Glover isn't a soul singer. Lenny isn't either most of the time but has sung in that style (Example "It Ain't Over Til It's Over") I would put prince in this category as well. Not purely a soul singer but can sing in that style. Glad you brought Glover and Kravitz up as it helps to prove the point you can't be called a soul singer just because you are black.

Corey Glover's background as a vocalist is CLEARLY gospel. Aside from the fact that he occasionally throws a hymn (acapella) in during sets, when you listen to cuts like "Love Rears Its Ugly Head", you know you don't get those riffs from emulating Areosmith and AC/DC.

I still disagree. Soul isn't exclusive to black people.
That's just your opinion. And I've only just realised that all the artists that I mentioned who complemented Kate on her vocal work are actually black themselves. And that says what? It suggests to me that they know a soulful voice when they hear one!!

so that says what? he's not a soul singer because he chose a different genre of music to sing. Now he can switch genre's but you know how fickle the public is he'll have to work hard at it if he wanted to be considered a soul singer.

It's just my opinion that style we call soul came from the black church? Excuse me! Are you really trying to debate that? I never said soul was exclusive to black people only explained where that style came from as it seems we were mistaking passion for soul. Not the same thing as much as some people are trying to sell that idea on here. And what difference does it make if Kate Bush has black back-up singers lol I won't even touch that one right now.
