(She's better than many black soul singers as well, especially in regard to lyrical ability, vocal range, craftsmanship, talent, musicianship and longevity!!!)
--- Your correct there are not many female RnB singers around today that can compare to Teena Marie. To hear people rant and rave about a Mary J. Blige when someone like Teena Maria is around is bizzare. | |

Mary J Blige is considered 2 be the female Bobby Womack(vocaly) both have the same raspy thang going on but both deliever pre4mances with raw emotions & depth enough to wipe Mariah, Whitney & Celine. You have to witness MJB 2 know exactly what I'm talking about. As 4 the thread's question? Teena Marie all day and night Who could go wrong with "Fire & Desire" and "Mr.Gaye"? | |

Annie who? Lennox? Is she kin to Lennox Lewis?
Seriously...without a doubt TEENA is a soul singer. Why? Everything she has done has been all about soul & R&B music. She got the "R&B treatment" from her label, too. Annie has a great voice, but is not a soul singer. Everybody black grew up around that one white family in the neighborhood who went through the same things as we did. Sang in the Baptist church choir then went to the candy lady on Sunday after church. That's where Teena is with "US". We FEEL Teena when she's singing "Fire and Desire" and when she sang "M-O-N-E-Y neva did a thing for L-O-V-I-N"; she FEELS the same way as our sistas do when she sings and conveys that same emotion. She draws from the same pains as Lauryn and Whitney and Mary. Just like Whitney had to deal with Bobby, Teena had to deal with Rick James...that couldn't have been easy. Teena is DOWN. Annie? Not so much. Jon B. is down too, in my book. | |

Michael McDonald should be at or near the top of the list. He's got the best voice of any white soul crooner I've ever heard. I was listening to NPR today and they were playing songs from his new LP of Motown covers. That man can SANG.
I'd also co-sign on Teena Marie. There are a lot of good white R and B acts, but as far as true SOUL acts, I think of those and few others. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Kate technically doesn't do soul music,so in that way she is NOT a "soul singer" like Aretha or Chaka, but at the same time, her singing can be described as "soulful",ok? I don't know if you can understand what I'm saying, but it makes sense to me I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos | |

Bobby Caldwell is white! What, what, WHAT!?!? I can feel your shock. I remember back in the day he would have album covers where you would never see his face. I was as shocked as you when I finally found out he was a white dude. Pretty much proves my case for him being at the top of the list of white male soul singers. UptownDeb said: btw, does anyone know whether Phoebe Snow is black or white? This has been one of my personal 7 wonders of the world for ages. Phoebe was on a late night show years ago and the host (it may have been Merv Griffin) said that he always thought she was a black singer. She and her background singers (one of whom was Luther Vandross!) fell out laughing and she said to him. "No, I'm not a black singer." It was really funny because what she meant was that she was a SINGER and not to be catagorized by race. I later found out that she was born Phoebe Laub in Teaneck New Jersey and took her name from the train called the Phoebe Snow. Laub is, I believe, generally considered a Jewish surname, but you'll have to do more research if that isn't enough. BTW, I was a HUGE fan back in the day and remain one today. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.
