Common's Finding Forever: Best of the Year

I'm loving this freakin' album. I've always kinda liked him, but everything comes together on this album.

I was thinking I liked Kanye's mixtape, but it turns out I was just loving Common. cool Gonna be a hard one to beat by the end of this year.

Im sorry but Kanye's album is gonna be a lil bit on top of this one for me. The samples are too promising that Kanye was saving the best 4 himself.

Funny that I was listenin 2 this album 2dai. The only thing that's missing on this album is a song with a strong grasp that pulls in and doesnt let you forget what the song was. Be had a good couple of those 2 me.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

See I didn't even respond, I knew you'd come around.
lol

I kind of know what you mean though about Common. He can get a little full of uplift, and while sometimes it's cool, he can also take it overboard. But I love the sound of his voice, and I love the music on this new album. He says he "found a new Primo," which I guess means Kanye, but some of the beats do have that old Premiere sound.

Primo is DJ Premiere, and he's saying Kanye is like the new Premiere. Or am I misunderstanding your question?

Well, I did just realize I've been throwing an extra "e" on his name. lol
But, if that doesn't clear up the confusion, Wikipedia might. He's just about my favorite hip hop producer ever.

really, what about it?

I think I may have gone a LITTLE overboard with the thread title, but I do think it's a damn fine release and definitely my favorite hip hop CD of the year.

Parts just seem lazy, like he just didn't give a damn. I may be unfair in judging it because I keep thinking how wonderful BE was. I remember loving Testify and Go from the moment I heard them. Nothing has grabbed me but I will give it another shot. It is the only hip hop album I've bought this year.

I keep good things about Common's CD too. But I think a lot of his sucess is because of Kanye West great production style, etc. He's always been good, but he wasnt mainstream until now.

I'm pretty much feeling the same way. BE had me from the very first spin, song for song nod I just cracked the new one yesterday, so far tracks 11 & 12 (or is it 10 & 11??) absolutely HAVE me right now. But overall it sounds cool & I'm sure the rest of it will grow on me, except for the one where Kanye is screaming one word repeatedly on the hook - that shit sounds crazy lol

& maybe I'm late noticing but doesn't it seem like Nina Simone is the latest to be getting "robbed" left & right? I can't really complain b/c so far I like the songs that have sampled her, but I hate for her legacy to be reduced to somebody's fucking hook, you know??? confused

In my opinion he took a big step backwards (musically) with BE after the brilliant Electric Circus and Like Water for chocolate.
Im glad he making the money but I aint buying anything from him until he gets back to working with the soulquarians.

"Go" did nothing for me, personally. It felt much more like a bid for commercial success than anything off this album. The first tracks I heard were from Kanye's mixtape (People, The Game) and both of those better represent Common/Kanye's Stevie Wonder love, which always hooks me. His dumbass TMZ celeb-name-dropping bothers me on this one, but his flow fits so much better over this style, to me.
This one reminds me much more of Like Water For Chocolate, but it feels less forced or something. He's kinda corny, but sounds more OK about it.

I kind of agree with you in the fact that be was a step back from electric circus and like water for chocolate. I do like finding forever better than be. Also you are right i actually like his work with questlove, djpremier, and the late j dilla better than his work with kanye but his work with kanye is still good and it has allowed him to reach mainstream which is great for a rapper like common who has long been unappreciated.

On the corny thing, it really hurts my ears that he put "the Breakup w/ Jennifer & Vince Vaughn" (or whatever the phrasing was) in a song whofarted It's bad enough when you date your shit w/ pop culture anecdotes, but to name a shitty movie AND name it's wack stars?? Come ON hammer
