because it's a joke?

I thought jokes were supposed to be funny. If someone finds calling a Japanese national a "Jap" hilarious.... Wow...

i'm not going to insult your intelligence by saying "if you don't get it i can't explain it", but i don't think her comedy is racist or meant to harm any group, though nor do i think her humor is targeted toward people who are especially sensitive.

You are not insulting my intelligence. I realize that she is saying these things in a ironic way. But it still boggles my mind that people find humor in terms like "Jap." What next? "Gook?"

I don't think so, but she makes a lot of racial jokes.

How is using the term "Jap" in reference to Japanese nationals not being racist?

I thought she was referring to herself as a J.A.P. and not a Japanese national. Wasn't that the joke?

Yeah she was talking about someone as a "jap" in a way that implied "Jewish American Princess" and then said "and by jap, I meant 'japanese person.'"

So the joke wasn't about calling someone an insulting name, but setting up an expectation in the audience and then giving them something different.

It's not necessarily hilarious, but not necessarily racist either. She uses lots of racial terms which would offend some people, but I don't think she comes across as racist at all. She makes fun of everyone equally.

actually, i think she's used "gook" in her routine before too. lol

the whole point of the "jap" joke was that she referred to herself using that word, then said "by that i mean japanese". see, the joke is, you look at her and you see a very jewish looking young woman, and she's asking you to believe she's not only japanese, but that it's appropriate for her to refer to her non-japanese self as a "jap", or that it's even appropriate to use the term J.A.P. for that matter. but that's what she does - she plays with social taboos in a way that makes her channel all the ignorance we deal with every day, and she gives us a chance to laugh at the absurdity of it. i admire that. some people can hang with it, and i totally understand that.

I had no idea that some found the term Jewish-American Princess alright. Boggles the mind.

What I find problematic about routines like hers is that they do not solve anything. Her insensitivity to Britney Spears and her children makes me question her efforts to address racism. But, whatever. This thread got way off topic.

I don't think she's racist...
But to be honest she represents everything I hate...

She knows what she's doing... And she's not stupid...

But please don't bring the "she plays with social taboos in a way that makes her channel all the ignorance we deal with every day" argument. That's too easy...

Brittany would so kick Sarah Silveman's skinny ass. Have you seen the thighs on Brit? One good kick and that would be all she wrote.
She needs to slap the shit out of Sarah...talking about the babies is waaaayyy off limits. If those were my babies that unfunny, no talent ass, Sarah Silverman was talking about, I'd still be whooping her ass.

I'm no fan of Brittny, but that's just wrong. Open up that can of whoop ass Brit! Stomp that Ho! lol

boxed Sorry. My ghetto side comes out sometimes.

I actually do think that's what she's doing but it's not all she's doing.

She's also using schocking & offensive language to get attention as a performer, and maybe that's not quite so noble.

It doesn't bug me because I think her intentions are to be funny, and not to make light of serious problems or divide people, but I can see that when she jokes about rape, for example, that is might not be so funny to everyone.

I thought I was clear and I dont want to turn this thread off topic....

I hate when some people always try to find excuses to explain this kind of humour

Great comedians can play with social taboos without going too far like that.....

But as I already said before, She knows what she's doing... And she's not stupid...

Sarah Silverman.. I hate that bitch. She be telling all these jokes. And the shit don't even be funny.

And Sarah Silverman said some really negative things about Britney's children. I didn't think that was cool. If I were Britney I woulda fucked her up.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Sarah Silverman wasn't funny at the VMAs and IMHO it had nothing to do with her material. I think she was stoned/drunk/medicated, just like everyone else there was (except Chris Brown).

Even still, attacking Spears' kids was wrong.

Skinhead chicks are SCARY. If she took that weave off before the match I bet Sarah would forfeit.

I don't have a problem with "how far she takes it". She's a comedian, and part of her job is to say the unthinkable. I just wish more of it was actually funny.

Bill Hicks (RIP) was a guy who could take it way, way, waaaaay too far without making you doubt his compassion and intelligence. (One of my favorite routines involves Jay Leno blowing his brains out on national TV when he finds his scheduled guests are Patrick Duffy and Joey Lawrence. It's unbelievably horrible, yet leaves me on the floor every time.) She doesn't really have that. It's more about finding those last few buttons we still have in this desensitized world, and jamming down on them with her thumb. Then sticking that thumb in her butt while she does something really childish and adorable.

What exactly is Sarah Silverman's talent? How is saying mean things about people that aren't either funny or clever, such as they are washed up and have accomplished all they are going to ever do in their life and their children are mistakes, a talent?

Yes, Britney's performance at the MTV Awards was awful, but she has given some brilliant performances in the past and sung some great songs such as Toxic and Slave to You. I think over the course of her career she has shown a lot more talent and creativity than Sarah Silverman has.

eek .

I think i just saw someone actually use the phrase "brilliant performance" within the same sentence as a girl known as Britney Spears...
