He came out in Europe with the release of Older which was after Listen Without Prejudice. The drama with that was ditching the teen heartthrob image and being taken as a serious artist. Freedom is about escaping his Wham! days and the Faith era, not his sexuality. Wrong George was outed after the faith album. He didn't out himself. At the time he was passing as straight and dated a model, who he said he loved. There was a big hoopla about it because he was huge at the time and the industry was just as fickle about his career going forward. He purposely came out with "Listen Without Prejudice" without being on the album cover and not in the videos. "Freedom 90" addresses wanting the fans to listen to what he had to offer and not judge him based on his sexuality, him accepting the straight pop star image he had in order to sell records and now deciding to be his gay self. I remember the shit like it was yesterday. It is documented "Freedom '90" was the third single and the only one from the album to be supported by a music video; the song was a highly-praised confessional project from George, acknowledging his fortune and luck from his early days with Wham! - referring directly to Andrew Ridgeley as his "buddy" - but maintaining that he was a changed man, with a more cynical and grown-up attitude to the business he was in. The song also alludes heavily to the struggles of being a closet homosexual, and acted as a catalyst to his effort to break free from his publishing contract with Sony Music. He was already out when "Older" was released. The big incident at that time was park bathroom incident which he spoofed in the video for "Outside." That wasn't when he came out. He was already out [Edited 9/11/07 22:41pm]

Please, anybody, direct me towards an interview or quote from George Michael prior to his 1998 arrest where he explicitly says he's homosexual. I, for one, don't recall that happening. [Edited 9/12/07 5:38am]

To win the race? A prettier face! Brand new clothes and a big fat place On your rock and roll tv But today the way i play the game is not the same No way Think i'm gonna get me some happy I think there's something you should know I think it's time i told you so There's something deep inside of me There's someone else i've got to be Take back your picture in a frame Take back your singing in the rain I just hope you understand Sometimes the clothes do not make the man went back home got a brand new face For the boys on mtv But today the way i play the game has got to change Oh yeah Now i'm gonna get myself happy Those lyrics ring true for many people, especially people in the music industry who are being controlled by the companies and forced to be part of images. At least, Alicia's my future ex wife, so don't fuck it up "Freedom 90" is about being gay. You didn't get that memo? Ummm...no its not .... Its about George fighting his record company about his music, and his image. They wanted him to sing teenybopper songs, and keep on being this cover boy poster model that he had always been,.... and he did not have that in mind for himself at all. Most of the videos for that album did not have him in it!!! Listen again to the words. And the visuals of him blowing up the faith guitar, jacket, and jukebox! It about him distroying the image that his record company had made for him. Shortly after, he broke his record contract, and sued sony for not letting him make the music he wanted to make. (sounds familiar?? lol) He lost that suit sadly, and it took lots of years and momentum off his career. Sounds alot like Princes troubles really. But George had the guts to sue them unlike Prince though... Anyway, back to the song...and the struggle he speaks about in the lyrics.... It just happends to be that it could fit his sexuality as well, but that is not the meaning of the song.... (Edited to address the other post....) And....Nope.... You will find no public admission of coming out prior to 1998....because there is none!!! He was not offically out untill that bathroom arrrest in 98....Of couse the undertone of the song could also be seen as him struggling with his sexuality, but offically it was not. I mean really who did not know that he was gay???? Everyone knew, but he did not out himself untill then. I guess the last worthy thing he did was that HBO flick w/ Sanaa Lathan. He needs to get back to some real shit... Earlier in her career, she was denying they were together in intervies and just last year when he released and EP, he denied it on 106 & Park saying they were just close friends and that he was single. She always says, publicly, he is her producer and music partner. The girl is a fucking enigma Her character in Smokin' Aces wasn't gay. Her partner was gay and in love with her. According to Alicia there was a confrontation scene that was cut out of the movie that solidified her character was straight
