1) Prince & Madonna
2) No 3) The wide variety of genres in the Top 40; Luther Vandross; Nirvana; Kirsty MacColl; rap was good; good quality soul music; fewer boy bands/manufactured shite; 7" vinyl singles and Freddie Mercury. 4) The appalling european dance/trance acts; Stock Aitken Waterman pants; Cliff Richard being #1 every Christmas; Bryan Adams' 'Everything I do' being #1 all summer. 5) Not a lot - Prince and Madonna are still making records though 6) Pretty much everything but especially 50 Cent and all that gangster rap crap; bland and boring 'radio' acts with no personality; everything is about image; manufactured crap. 7) Much harder. 8) Kirsty MacColl, Luther, Nirvana, James Brown, Lisa Stansfield to name a few. 9) Kylie Minogue, Take That, LL Cool J and I'm sorry to say it but Madonna. Thought her days were numbered after 'Bedtime stories.' Glad she proved me wrong! 10) Mum and my babysitter Michele. 11) Unnecessary 12) Good question - Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb 13) in my lifetime - 1991; of all time prob 1978 14) word of mouth 15) I'm prob stuck in several but I know a few people stuck in 1980s. 16) soul 17) Prob Michael Jacksons' 'Bad' and Madonna's 'Immaculate Collection.' I definitely drove them mad with 808 State's 'Pacific.' 18) First - Michael Jackson at Cardiff Arms Park, 1992. Last - Prince at The O2, August 27th 2007. 19) I missed Punk the first time around 20) I have no idea.

1. who is your favourite artist at the moment?
Rick James, possibly. Oh you mean, my favourite, not the one I've been listening more than the others - no, I don't have one. 2. is your favourite artist 'then' when u were younger the same as is 'now'? No, but Prince is probably my favourite pop musician still to this day. 3. what do you miss most about music then? I still had entirely positive feelings for it - as opposed to being a former recording studio worker and a rock musician who "didn't make it". 4. what don't you miss about it then? The single-mindedness. I had no interest for the type of records that would sell only several hundred copies at maximum. Those days I thought it was some kind of a mark of a bad record. 5. what do you like about the music now? I listen mostly to music that is made by artists who just want to make music on their own terms - none of them make a proper living out of it. 6. what do you not like about it now? I don't usually have to spend any of my time worrying about music I don't really like, I just don't listen to it. Period. 7. is it harder to find music u like now or easier? God bless soulseek. 8. who did you think would still be around that isn't? Terence Trent D'Arby I used to like a lot as younger - he really isn't around as a widely recognized name. 9. who did you think wouldn't be around that still is? In terms of pop music? All the Britneys and the Justin Timberlakes. 10. who influenced your musical tastes most in your life? Maybe my uncle. Altough just for the jazz part. 11. music videos: necessary or not? They are necessary for the type of music they are made for. 12. what's your favourite remake of an older song by an artist of today? Can't really think of any at the moment. 13. what was your favourite single year for music overall? Maybe 2004. In my own favoured genres. 14. where do you hear about new artists now if not the radio or internet? No, it's exclusively the internet. 15. are u or someone you know stuck in a musical era? i.e. 80's,90's... No. 16. what genre of music are you most into at the moment? Noise. 17. what artist or album did u drive your parents nuts with? Jimi Hendrix, "Experience" 18. what was the 1st concert u attended and what was the last? Michael Jackson was the first I got the ticket for, altough I later found out that I had seen Miles Davis as a kid without knowing who he was. I don't go to "concerts" as they are something for mainstream music. The last live event I attended was a local power electronics night held in an industrial warehouse. 19. what genre of music did you miss out on, or didn't get, that u wish u did? I guess I missed the golden era of IDM - the fuck did I even know back then what IDM really was. 20. who on the org shares your taste in music the most? Not really anyone, maybe CinisterCee for some of the more electronic beat-oriented stuff, and that one guy who listens to Throbbing Gristle and Coil. bonus: recommend 1 non popular album that u think we should all know about. 1. who is your favourite artist at the moment?
His name is Prince... 2. is your favourite artist 'then' when u were younger the same as is 'now'? My 'favourites' are changing all of the time. First band that I was ever into was Queen. 3. what do you miss most about music then? The competition within the mainstream of different, and vital, musical genres and scenes. (Nowadays, I would say that musical tastes are very fragmented, with the largest minority of tastes being hip-hop/R& B derived blandoramas and pop ringtone fodder). 4. what don't you miss about it then? The self importance of Music journalists. (The the NME and Rolling Stone are still guilty. And at least there was a time that these publications were written by semi literates...) 5. what do you like about the music now? Its ease of avalability. The 'DIY' music industry 6. what do you not like about it now? Its relegation to becoming just another part of pop culture, its disposibilty and the ascendancy of bland talent show singers who se only purpose is to make a fast buck for their svengali. 7. is it harder to find music u like now or easier? Yes, with the internet and all that. 8. who did you think would still be around that isn't? Blur 9. who did you think wouldn't be around that still is? Sly Stone (Given his heatlh, I'm quite surprised that hehas gotten out ion the road again, even if his public appearances have been patchy at best). Bian Wilson (again, dueto the state of his health). 10. who influenced your musical tastes most in your life? My Mother. Her love of Rock and Soul is the foundation of musical tastes. 11. music videos: necessary or not? If they develop the main lyrical or musical themes in the song, yes. If they are just a bit of promotional flashbang wallop, then no. 12. what's your favourite remake of an older song by an artist of today? Dunno 13. what was your favourite single year for music overall? Its close between 1975 and 1987, the years that many of my favourite albums were released. Out of the years that I have been actively listening to Music, then probably 2006, because I discovered a lot of great new sounds. 14. where do you hear about new artists now if not the radio or internet? Magazines/Press, word of mouth, or I may be lucky enough to discover a new favourite by catching them live. 15. are u or someone you know stuck in a musical era? i.e. 80's,90's... No 16. what genre of music are you most into at the moment? 60s/70s Soul 17. what artist or album did u drive your parents nuts with? I didn't. I was polite enough to listen to my music through headphones. 18. what was the 1st concert u attended and what was the last? First: Elton John (Wembley 1989). First of my own accord: Guns N Roses (London, 2002). Most Recent.: Martha Revves and the Vandellas (Camden, Last Night) 19. what genre of music did you miss out on, or didn't get, that u wish u did? I still don't appreciate be-bop jazz on as deep a level as I ought to have. And I suppoe itwould have been fun to have been a part of the hard rock/metal scene from the 70s/80s or the 'Britpop' and Grunge scenes from the 90's. (I'm into the music, but I am too young to have been around 'at the time') 20. who on the org shares your taste in music the most? Dunno. I'm new around here. bonus: recommend 1 non popular album that u think we should all know about. [i] 'Zero Time' by Tonto's Expanding Head Band, is a pretty important album, being one of the first to feature completely synthesised, original compositions. (Though I should hopethat most Stevie Wonder fans are awre of this album). Also Darryl HAll and Robert Fripp's 'Sacred Songs' is hot, for the unique (?) combination of Blue eyed soul and Guitar ambience. It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

CHIC0 said: 1. who is your favourite artist at the moment? Prince of course. 2. is your favourite artist 'then' when u were younger the same as is 'now'? One day I hope to get a tattoo that says "PRINCE 4EVER!" 3. what do you miss most about music then? The fact that it was done right by real artists, musicians. And also, many of them were innovators and revolutionaries. 4. what don't you miss about it then? 5. what do you like about the music now? Nice to see some young folks appreciate stuff from the 80's like Post-Punk and New Wave. I always thought I was alone in that kind of love. 6. what do you not like about it now? No one's really trying to break new ground. Well, the ones that are aren't really selling as much as the ones that aren't. In a perfect world Bloc Party would outsell 50 Cent in a heartbeat. Also, Clear Channel have become the new fascists in the industry by formatting everything and making a lot of garbage the representatives of what is popular and amazing today. 7. is it harder to find music u like now or easier? Much easier thanks to the internet. 8. who did you think would still be around that isn't? It's such a shame that The Dismemberment Plan had to call it quits before they became huge. 9. who did you think wouldn't be around that still is? I'm amazed that the Rolling Stones are still alive and rocking out after 45 years. 10. who influenced your musical tastes most in your life? I guess my mother since her tastes were eclectic like me. We grew up on great music like Rock, Funk, Jazz, Fusion, Neo-Soul....oh yes, and New Wave. At the same time I grew up on channels like MTV, VH1, and BET and took in EVERYTHING they gave me. This is ironic since I hate those channels now for their changing of the guard. 11. music videos: necessary or not? Since I grew up in the MTV era I would say that they are necessary since you would like to see your favorite artists onscreen as well as hear them on record. Also, before videos you only had the option of seeing them live. And if you couldn't see them live, you were assed out. But when The Beatles for example, stopped performing live they gave us music videos as a consolation gift. So it is necessary if you want to see an artist that you may not get to see live, but will give you something to remember them by. And thank goodness for that. 12. what's your favourite remake of an older song by an artist of today? I can't really think of one at the moment. 13. what was your favourite single year for music overall? I would have to say 1982. But that may very well change. 14. where do you hear about new artists now if not the radio or internet? I usually read about them in music magazines, especially the imported ones like MOJO and Q and Uncut. 15. are u or someone you know stuck in a musical era? i.e. 80's,90's... It would really be easy for me to say yes since I LOVE my 80's New Wave and stuff. But I still love great music from before and after that era. 16. what genre of music are you most into at the moment? I've kinda put New Wave on hold since I've been fiending for the FUNK!!! 17. what artist or album did u drive your parents nuts with? My mom always referred the 2-Tone ska that I used to blast in my room as "noise". But I loved it anyways. And it was great music. I guess she just didn't see it. 18. what was the 1st concert u attended and what was the last? I don't remember the first, but my guess is that it was this rock concert sponsored by the Black Rock Coalition in the around my way of Harlem. I remember dancing on stage with the band at one point. It was fun. The last concert was at a friend's loft party. It was Hip-Hop-themed so you had acts like Melle Mel, Eric Sermon of EPMD, and Saul Williams. It was pretty cool. 19. what genre of music did you miss out on, or didn't get, that u wish u did? Of course I miss New Wave. A lot of these new groups influenced by that era don't really get it. 20. who on the org shares your taste in music the most? Probably Anx, Moonbeam, Gangstafam and Psychodelicide. bonus: recommend 1 non popular album that u think we should all know about. No one here in orgland ever seems to talk about Maximum Joy. They were a great Punk/Funk band from the 80's New Wave era. Get their comp CD, "Unlimited 1979-83". [Edited 9/9/07 5:36am] NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

1. who is your favourite artist at the moment? The Fall
2. is your favourite artist 'then' when u were younger the same as is 'now'? I guess the Fall have been my favourite band since I was 19 or so. Prince would have been my preferred artist prior to that. 3. what do you miss most about music then? I suppose there was a little more melody and proper song construction back in the ‘80s, but those qualities were well in decline by then. I wouldn’t call it a golden age or anything. 4. what don't you miss about it then? Rick Astley-style synth-bass rhythms, plastic-sounding productions, effete UK synth-wimps. 5. what do you like about the music now? The qualities I like in music now are the same ones I’ve always keyed in on, and I’m usually able to find a good handful of albums I like every year. 6. what do you not like about it now? Not enough melody, too much music based around sounds, productions and rhythm. 7. is it harder to find music u like now or easier? Much easier. 8. who did you think would still be around that isn't? erf…I guess I might have thought that Paul Westerburg would have had a more substantial career. 9. who did you think wouldn't be around that still is? Madonna I suppose. Also, I glanced at a chart a little while back and was kinda appalled to see Bon Jovi at or at least near the top. Never would have thunk that, I guess. 10. who influenced your musical tastes most in your life? There were two Canadian public radio shows that I listened to regularly in my teens and early twenties that introduced me to a lot of music and opened my ears to a lot of sounds: Brave New Waves hosted by Brent Bambury and Nightlines hosted by David Wisdom. 11. music videos: necessary or not? Not necessary for me, anyway, though I’ll always appreciate it when someone goes to the trouble of making a clever one. 12. what's your favourite remake of an older song by an artist of today? I honestly cannot think of one. 13. what was your favourite single year for music overall? I just looked up my top twenty list and found that there were three albums from ’79 there, so let’s go with that. 14. where do you hear about new artists now if not the radio or internet? Word of mouth, certain critics that I follow. 15. are u or someone you know stuck in a musical era? i.e. 80's,90's... I suppose I’m a bit stuck in the ‘60s and ‘70s at the expense of current stuff. I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot, but I get more enjoyment out of listening to older music these days. 16. what genre of music are you most into at the moment? Just the same old crap…’60s pop, prog, punk, singer-songwriter-y stuff occasionally, the odd electronic thing. 17. what artist or album did u drive your parents nuts with? Ministry’s the Land of Rape and Honey got my dad pretty worked up once. 18. what was the 1st concert u attended and what was the last? First – Alice Cooper (could have been worse). Last – Dweezil Zappa. I missed Lucinda Williams a few months back, which absolutely kills me. 19. what genre of music did you miss out on, or didn't get, that u wish u did? Jazz, predictably enough. I did make an honest effort for a while. 20. who on the org shares your taste in music the most? I think I have a lot in common with Shapeshifter and Mendescity. I don’t know if I actually have that much in common with Anxiety, Gangstafam, sextonseven, theAudience and Moonbeam, but I think we’re maybe all dealing from the same deck of cards (if that makes any sense). Steve Wynn’s …tick…tick…tick is my favourite guitar rock album of the past few years. Lots of crunchy Crazy Horse-style playing and good melodies all the way through. [Edited 9/12/07 2:35am]
