Young started his career as a DJ, and it was at a gig at the L.A. nightclub Eve After Dark that he connected with its owner, Alonzo Williams. Williams would bring together local talent and form the World Class Wreckin' Cru and Kru-Cut Records in 1984. The World Class Wreckin' Cru would become stars of the electro-hop scene that dominated early-80's West Coast hip hop, and their first hit "Surgery" would prominently feature Dr. Dre on the turntables. It was during this time with Kru-Cut that Young would first work with fellow Wreckin' Cru member (and future creative partner) DJ Yella; singer and girlfriend Michel'le, recording "Turn Off The Lights", which would become a local hit in 1987; and rapper Ice Cube, whose group C.I.A. was signed to Kru-Cut.

In addition to his work with the World Class Wreckin' Cru, Young gained a reputation as a capable mixtape DJ. On one release, "'86 in the Mix", he edited 300 hip hop records into one 60 minute mix. He continued to make and sell mix tapes at a local swap-meet in L.A. until as late as 1989, before finally dropping the practice to fully concentrate on his rap career.

There was a great article in the LA Times about a year ago about the old days of this crew... Dre was talented but didn't have his shit together, constantly getting in trouble with the law and Lonzo Williams would have to bail him out. The one day that Dre called up from jail & Lonzo told him "I'm gonna let your ass sit in jail for a while," he called up Eazy-E, who'd been bugging him to make a record, and never looked back.

Hell, that's when he was good. "The Fly" and "Bionic" are jams and they were original songs made from scratch. He should have stuck to more jams like those instead of the stripped down, midtempo, sampled, boring ass shit he later did.

As far as the make-up and clothes goes, he should have stuck to that also instead of the ignorant thug bullshit. People can say he looks gay all they want to but looking gay is the biggest compliment there is. Looking like a thug is something to be ashamed of.

The World Class Wrecking' Cru made some classic electro-funk jams: "Surgery," "Juice" and the ballad "Turn Off the Lights." Basically, think of Dr. Dre as another version of The Egyptian Lover during this period -- mixing the electro sound with party-chant, hip-hop rhymes.

The WCWC made two albums -- 1985's "World Class," which featured "Juice" and "Surgery:"

And 1986's "Rapped in Romance," which featured "Mission Possible," "World Class Freak" and "Wreckin' Cru Blues:"

"Turn Off the Lights" technically was a stand-alone single that was released in 1987, around the time Dr. Dre and Yella started their association with Eazy-E.
