Is someone more of an artist if....

they play the piano or any instrument in general? It just seems that some people seem to think that of certain vocalists. Alicia Keys is a great example of that. Everyone speaks so highly of her because she plays piano but does that mean she's more talented than say Mary J. Blige who doesn't play an instrument?? I actually prefer Mary J. but I like Alicia too.

I notice that about Alicia too. I like her alot but not because she plays the piano. I just think that adds to her appeal, but I also prefer Mary. I don't think playing an instrument makes a person more talented, well it makes them more talented in that area, but I owuldn't say more talented as an overall artist.

No, I don't think someone is an artist just because they play an instrument.

I like Alicia and Mary equally. I think both ladies are good artist, but not great artists.

Look at singers such as Chaka, Yolanda Adams, Barbra Striesand. They all have great voices but don't play instruments and I consider them to be real artists.

Having said that, I really respect and appreciate someone who can play, write and perform.

The term artist is overused though. Alot of people need to just be labeled Singers or Performers rather than artists. An artist to me, ONE has to have a hand in their career, either songwriting, direction whatever. TWO would be longevity through times when they are BIG and when they are not. That to me would cut it as an artist, playing is not important, but to me being involved in the career and writing is a must.

i agree that artists should probably write their own material. that way it's coming from the heart more. it's tricky though. i may also be guilty of thinkingt someone is more talented if they play an instrument but let's face it there are better singers out that than A. Keys who don't play an instrument. i don think people put her on a pedestal because of it though.

I think it has do with how well the performer can emote. Many Motown artists didn't right their own material but they could emote and make you feel the song. To me, that's a true talent. Just because they can't play an instrument doesn't mean they're not gifted IMO
