It's awesome that all original members are still alive and together. If they ever come to your area, definitely check them out. I saw them last year. A fave I'm adding is "I Touched A Dream."
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I think actually one of the original member left the group way back in 57 or 58 to join one of those doo-wop groups. Either the Flamingos or the Cadallacs or someone like that.

The Dells first formed in 1952 in Harvey, Illinois at a high school. The original members were as followed:

Junior Marvin (the famous baritone lead singer)
Johnny Funches (the original tenor)
Mickey McGill and his brother Lucius
Chuck Barksdale
...and Verne Allison

The Dells temporarily disbanded in 1958 following a car crash that almost ended Mickey's career due to a leg injury abstained from the crash. Lucius had long left by then. And the Dells' original version of "Oh What a Night" was a hit.

Chuck moved to D.C. after Harvey Fuqua recruited to be a member of the "new Moonglows", which featured a very young Marvin Gaye.

In 1960, Mickey recovered, Chuck returned to Chicago where he and the Dells reformed but not before Johnny Funches walked out. He was replaced by the Flamingos' Johnny Carter and that lineup has been solid since. smile

Damn, y'all...I love The Dells so much I don't even want to respond to this! LOL These are definitely some of my faves as well. I've been a fan forever!! A couple of years ago, I updated my collection with a really nice cd set (It's either 3 or 4 in the set) that I THINK is from Rhino. Unfortunately, I'm not home right now and don't have it with me, but if you want their best stuff, it's on there. There are also several versions of some of their old work like "Oh What A Night" and "Stay In My Corner." And....definitely see them LIVE if you get the chance!!
