As I was reading your post, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt until I

read THIS:

As for "copying gangsta rap", please listen to "ready to die". That shit almost defines gangsta rap.

eek

That's where I stopped reading.

If I were you, I'd sit this debate out, playa.

Are you saying you don't believe that "ready to die" is so called "gangsta rap"?
Because it has no parliament samples?
Because biggies from the east?

Or are you saying you don't rate this magnificent album?

Really? I'd concede that Biggie is a tad overrated, but, not THE most overrated. That could go to any number of post-Biggie/'Pac MCs. And maybe 'Pac himself, to the degree that both he and Biggie are great MCs but not really among the very best of the best per se.

As it relates to public perception and reality, Biggie is the most overrated rapper of all time. His overall skills never matched his deserving of the accolades and the popularity. His timing was great but he was a Puffy-generated act more so than a Hip-Hop artist. The same way Puffy created Mase and the same way Puffy tried to create Loon.

Mutha. Come on, na. He had more talent as an MC than you give him ccredit for.

You're comparing Christopher Wallace to Mase and Loon?

Really?

No, I'm saying it's utterly ridiculous to suggest that ANY of Biggie's albums "defined" G-Rap.

No, Biggie was decent. Mase and Loon were pure, unadulterated garbage. All I'm saying is that all 3 were Puffy-generated, that's all.

You know, this album prevented hip-hop from going that way. At least for a while. It proved that you could bring hardcore hip-hop to the table and sell a lot of records.

Now, gangsta rap is more of an empty novelty act than Hammer ever was.

Well what I'm saying is that RTD is "gangsta" in nature, doesn't sound like anything else and is highly regarded by genuine hip hop fans of many persuasions.

Yeah, I figured as much when you posted that hilarious cartoon clip. How Hammer ever went broke I'll never know. Did you know he was a stoolie for the A's owner in the 70's?

But I digress.

Anyways, I wanted to post that segue before I forgot. You know, compared to some of the pseudo-minstrels on the airwaves these days, Hammer looks like Sam Cooke.

eek If you truly believe that then you shouldn't be posting in this thread at all.

You're saying these cats were doing Hammer-style "hip-hop" in the late 80s - early 90s?: ATCQ, Digital Underground, Digable Planets, JB, De La, Rakim, Pac, NWA, The DOC, X-Clan, Stetsasonic, Paris, The Ultramagnetic MCs.....I can go on and on.

Ah, the days of wine and roses for hip-hop, when quality acts were a dime a dozen (fortunately) and novelty acts were hard to come by.

You're still wrong though because Kid & Play had a dope cut out around then called "Gettin' Funky" and were a legit rap duo until they started getting into film. Kwame was tons better than Hammer and a different steelo as well. And Young MC was just plain garbage.

But all I was saying was you were wrong about the "everyone" comment.
