Phyllis Hyman's Fans; Its About Time - A New Book Due The 4th Of Sept PHYLLIS HYMAN BIO DUE IN SEPT: Blessed by singer’s estate, book chronicles singer’s rise to fame and suicide in 1995.
*A biography on famed R&B vocalist Phyllis Hyman – who rose to fame in the 80s with such hits as “Old Friend” and “You Know How To Love Me” before committing suicide in 1995 – will be released next month through JAM Books. Titled “Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story,” the biography “explores the tormented soul that existed beneath Hyman’s statuesque beauty and captivating stage presence.” Author Jason A. Michael founded JAM Books to release the project after a number of major publishers turned him down, stating no one remembered Hyman and there would be no market for the book. Michael follows Hyman’s beginnings in Pittsburgh and early success, as well as her battles against racism and sexism in the music industry. Her turbulent personal relationships and struggles with substance abuse and bipolar disease are also detailed, as are the circumstances that contributed to her suicide in 1995, just hours before she was to perform at the legendary Apollo Theatre. The book also details the following: • Why Hyman, who was the first choice for the role of “Shug Avery” in the movie adaptation of The Color Purple, lost the role. • How the clashes and head-butting with music mogul Clive Davis had a detrimental effect on Hyman’s career. • Hyman’s assessment of the talents of other singers of the day including Jody Watley, Vanity, and Paula Adbul. • How one of the last songs Hyman wrote, “Come Right Or Not At All” is a testament to her attitude about her life; and much more. It was from Hazel Scott's interview in the early 70's(Ebnoy magazine) when she talked about seeing Billie @ her later years in France(in some crummy club), she was at such a bad condition Hazel couldn't help but to cry, thats when Billie grabbed her from her fist and cornered her in the nearest wall and told her that. | |
