Review LIFELINE Ben Harper & Innocent Criminals A very compelling exercise in economy. This release was actually recorded in the midst of a European tour to promote last year's release, BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN. Harper follows BSOTG's politically conscious, yet sprawling, mix of folk, rock, soul and funk with an elegant set of acoustic soul numbers. Think of the early Bill Withers records or Aretha's Atlantic recordings. Recorded in an analog studio with no Pro-Tools and minimal use of overdubs, LIFELINE is a masterful tip of the hat to doing things the old ways. It clocks in at under 45 minutes and everything from the band's heightened sense of unity to the soulful vocals of Harper and his background singers to the unified theme of romance and relationships make this one of the year's best recordings. test | |
