That's a bad-ass album right there... headbang

And don't even frigging get me started on the acapella version of "I Want You"... music

That's vocal heaven right there. Every time I hear it, I go "Marvin was a baaaaad man..." wow...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM TOO!!!! biggrin

My other track is "All the Way Round". I remember a poster in here brought the lyrics to this particular song. smile

Have you heard the alternate instrumental jam of "I Want You"? OH MY LORD... funk heaven. Ray Parker kills on the guitar, Frank Blair lays it down on the bass, the drums - which I presume to be Bugsy Wilcox, the strings and Marvin's backgrounds.... ooh-wee... love

That classic seamless, sublime Leon Ware production, the candy-sweet and ultra sensual vocals of Mr. Gaye, and who can forget the unforgettable, stylish painting of "A Night At The Sugar Shack" that was unveiled on the album cover. And if you pay close attention to each song, you'll realize that the entire album is a musical description of events taking place on the album cover. That's slick...

Marvin and Leon were truly mad geniuses back in the day! All the tracks flow into one another with ease, from the soothing horn drenched `Come live with me angel', the downtempo haunting instrumental piece `After the dance' (reprised in a percussion filled vocal version at the end which has an entirely different feel), the ethereal sound of `Feel all my love inside', the too brief `I wanna be where you are', the silky smooth `All the way round', the ballad `Since I had you', and `Soon I'll be loving you again', a lush ballad introduced by delicate rolling percussion and filled with awesome backing vocals.

There's nothing more I can say about this work of art. Marvin was on an artistic roll in the 70s (that's not to say his other work wasn't great, mind you) and set the pace for today's R&B and Neo Soul crooners.

Check this clip out from Motown 25, where dancers recreate the quirkness and party-vibe of the classic IWY album cover:

It sure can! I mean, I know What's Going On is so overrated but it's sonically better than anything he's ever made, even though Here My Dear gets me more edge from me. I'll still say I Want You was his 3rd best album.

Marvin had so many important albums (as did Stevie) that it's HARD to pick which one was his best, really.

Maybe I was exaggerating a little because What's Going On is my favorite Marvin Gaye record ever. And it deserves all the praise it has gotten over the years, even though I'm still pissed that this wasn't nominated for a Grammy for Album Of The Year.

I have the deluxe edition of WGO and I was shocked at the different mixes of this album. The Detroit Mix was so raw and deep, that it didn't even sound nearly like the original album that was released. The live concert that is present here is even more interesting because Gaye, who suffered from stage fright, is in great form performing most of the songs from the timeless WGO album and some of his earlier stuff from the 60's. I absolutely love that deluxe edition! biggrin

And even Curtis Mayfield...

in fact I believe his classic solo debut from 1970 still competes with Marvin's WGO as the best of socially conscious R&B music ever made. I don't know which album would win.
