I actually loved this episode. Whodini were BOSS back then and Lady T., oh of course, she was the SHIZNIT!!!!
I loved the song she did with Ronnie... man, no one still can't f*ck with Teena, I don't care what any of y'all say!

Some thoughts...
Teena Marie can't lip-synch to save her life She didn't seem comfortable doing this.They really should have left her sing live.But she still kicked ass on "Lovergirl" 
Hall and Oates are one of my favorite groups,but their 80s videos are embarassing  bad dancing,big hair,silly clothes,these videos are tacky as hell,lol.

It was an okay episode, this must of been around the same time as that other 1984 episode with Donna Summers & The Staple Singers, the only song they didn't play from that episode is Shalamar's 'Dancing In The Sheets".
I even remember ya'll saying that Don was trying to make it the "Pop Train" that year showing those pop music videos. Just like the Huey Lewis video on the last one, that Hall & Oates video was out of place. | |

The Donna Summer/Staples Singers episode originally aired on December 15,1984. The Teena Marie/Whodini episode originally aired on January 12,1985. So yeah,these episodes were probably recorded around the same time.Woulda been nice if they had played different songs on every episode. | |

This episode was simply "so so". The songs they played for the dancers were some of the blandest ones of that era that they could find.
I didn't like the first performance by Teena Marie at all. Her and that guy up there with all those over dramatic gestures reminded me of being at a drag show. The second Teena Marie performance was great though and is the only reason I'm saving my recording of this episode. The best song they played on the whole episode was "Operator" by Midnight Star. However, it was ruined by those stiff girls who danced more like they belonged on "American Bandstand" rather than "Soul Train". It was an early episode from 1985. Don's getting too close to the border. Don't go go up to the summer of 1985. That's when things started really fucking up. . . [Edited 8/27/07 6:22am] Andy is a four letter word. | |

Actually, around 1983 or so, I had stopped watching "Soul Train" as religiously as I had before. The music was still good but Don started putting people on that couldn't dance. . . Both episodes obviously were recorded on the same day because all the dancers had on the same clothes in both episodes. Yeah, pop videos seemed to take the place of where the "Soul Train History Book" had previously been. Also, Don was bringing a lot more white dancers onto the show. Andy is a four letter word. | |

I agree that this episode was mediocre. I really enjoyed Teena's first performance. I used to like that song when Starchild was popular. "Out On A Limb" as a much better song. I wonder if the record company wanted to release the duet as a 2nd single, but changed their mind and released Jammin' instead?
It was really good seeing Whodini on television again. I really enjoyed "Friends" and "Freaks Come Out At Night". Until seeing this performance, I didn't realize they changed djs. I know that around the time I started listening to music, Sheena was the girl on Prince's record ("U Got the Look") and I vaguely remembered "The Lover in Me" being hot around '88 so I'm figuring they're flash forwarding towards the New Jack Swing-era episodes again if this is the case. It couldn't have been '85 because "Sugar Walls" came out in '84. I notice Don didn't add "as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!"
