Gino Vanelli (a quiet appreciation thread)

boxed Why am I so embarassed to admit that I really like Gino Vanelli's music?
This cat was so underrated. I hate "I Just Wanna Stop," his biggest hit, but if you dive into the album tracks, this boy is bad! Love the prog-rock influence and the jazz overtones of his music.

Okay, open the flood gates and let the comments begin! lol

No need for embarrassment. Gino made some great music. I love the albums 'Gist of the Gemini','Pauper in Paradise' and 'Brother to Brother'. Great synth work by Joe Vanelli. It might over the top for some, but it has it's place and I dig it.

Some of it's great, some of it's cheesy as hell. I tell you what though, at the age of 55 (I think), the man can sing his ass off. Check out this clip from a recent show in London...

I think it was just overplayed, like "Living Inside Myself." They (radio) tried to make him an adult comptporary artist. I never considered him to be that.

No need to be ashamed of liking Gino. I had completely forgotten about him until I saw him on "Soul Train" recently. I immediately remembered "I Just Wanna Stop" and fell in love with it all over again.

That's my favorite episode they played from the disco era. I have played that one over and over.

Those 2 songs got worn out on my LP.
I think you'd like Omens of Love & Summers of My Live also.

He had problems with Clive Davis too. After "I Just Wanna Stop" became a big hit in 1978,he signed with Arista.where Clive tried to turn him into an adult contemporary artist.Clive wanted him to sound like Air Supply disbelief They clashed over the direction of his next album 'Living Inside Myself'.As a result, that album didn't come out until 1981.Gino wisely left Arista after that.

I understand that the problems with Clive Davis reared after his first Arista album ("Nightwalker"). Clive wanted him to record a song entitled "Even The Nights Are Better". Gino refused and Air Supply were the recipients of this track. Clive refused to release Gino's second Arista album "Twisted Heart" and , such is Clive's power in the industry, made life very difficult for him (in the end, he bought back this album from Arista).

That's right,I heard that Clive was demanding that Gino record "Even The Nights Are Better",a very bland song that Air Supply later recorded barf He was trying to turn Gino into something that he clearly wasn't: a boring adult contemporary pop artist.

Look better in the shade!

I had the hots for him when I was, like 12, and thought for sure he was gonna be the next big thing. I had no idea he had already reached his peak, having already been "big" a decade before I heard of him!

Wasn't he married to, or dating, Bonnie Tyler for a while too?

I really loved Gino's music back in the late 70's and early 80's. He worked with great musicians and had a very tight band. 'Nightwalker" and "Brother to brother" were my favorite albums.
