guess what the #1 album is this week!

'High School Musical 2' Blasts In At No. 1

With the second biggest first-week sales tally of the year, the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 2" bows at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The set sold 615,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan, only a few thousand short of the 623,000 that Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" moved in June. Since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, only three other soundtracks have ever moved more than 615,000 in a week: Eminem's "8 Mile," "Titanic" and "The Bodyguard."

The first "High School Musical" soundtrack topped the chart numerous times last year and has sold 4.1 million copies to date. The Disney Channel's premiere of "High School Musical 2" on Aug. 17 scored 17.24 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, making it the most-watched basic cable telecast of all time.

"I think we definitely knew it was going to do well, just because the first one did so well and there were so many fans," Corbin Bleu, who plays amiable jock Chad Danforth, told Billboard.com in a recent interview. "We knew all the people that enjoyed the first movie were gonna want to see the second movie. [But] we didn't know it was gonna become as much of a phenomenon."

and to think my boss told me, when I brought this disc to work (the store where I work markets to kids!), it wasn't mainstream enough. falloff

anyways, seems like our good friends at disney found a new market and a promotion strategy that seems to pay of quite well...wasn't there another guy that thought of the idea to use movies as a vehicle to push music? you might know him, he get's mentioned around here a lot. anyone think this kind of promotional strategy might work for established artists (don't want to use the term 'real artists', as to not disrespect the cast of HM2)... release a movie as a huge trailer for an album?

or is this disney rehashing the purple rain strategy?
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I'm not surprised. Look how many mainstream artists in the 1990s and 2000s had hits on Disney soundtracks. Back in the 1980s, we would have laughed some Disney shit out of there.

I'm not surprised. No one should been surprised. I am so ashamed about this, but the last one was #1 on the Billboard for many weeks and became last year's best-selling album, so there's no doubt that this one won't be this year's best-selling album just because it's Disney and the kids love it. I hope this gets topped by someone tho! sad

And not only that, but the TV movie that was televised last week became the most watched cable telecast in history and had the largest audience of any program on broadcast or cable in the 2007 summer television season, along with Friday nights for the past five years. I'm so ashamed because alot of people claimed that both the CD and TV movie was disappointing! eek
