Talking to your friends about music...UGH

I've never been the one to follow trends, but I always knew what was big on the scene. I was hanging out with a group of friends, and I barely knew 80% of the people they were talking about! lol One thing I was proud about, though, that I've been able to stay away from the bullshit and listen to quality music the past 3 years.

Has anyone else had the experience where you can't even discuss music with friends because your taste is SOOOO different?

No, my friends also listen to noise, experimental electronic music and free jazz. So I'm fortunate like that.

... as for my female friends, now that's another story.

Most pf my friends just listen to one ttyp of music genre and that's it. They stick too it basically. I might have a group that listen to just "this" music, another group who listens to just "that" music and so forth,, they don't leave the box.

- Me, I listen to everything, so if my friends want to discuss Michael Jackson - boom we can talk about MJ and what not.

- If I have friends who want to discuss the Houston rap scene (Lil Flip, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire) - boom we can talk about Swisha House and whatever.

- If I have friends that want to discus Common, Talib or Mos - boom we can get at ot.

- If I have friends who want to chat bout the Doors, Led Zepplin, ect - lets get at it.

I can talk about almost anytype of music. I remember back in school, I would always be jamming old school mix-tape. I remember one CD I had the Systems "Don't Disturb thhi Groove", GUY's "Groove Me", LeVert "Pop Goes My Mind" TTD "If You Love Me Like You Say." I let my homeboys and girls check out, you should have seen the looks I got. But a week later, they was like, "a dog, burn me a copy of that CD you had last week." The chicks liked it the most, I had some nice slow kams on that CD. wink

That's the same with me, but it's now the point where I didn't know have the cats they were talking about. I was lost today. But they were just classmates in my music production class. My real friends are just as diverse as I am. I live in the Bay Area so I can't escape the hyphy/goin' dumb era(I've fallen victim to it SEVERAL times), but its the mainstream names. I didn't know Lil Wayne had a new album out lol

I would think with people being surrounded by music all the time, they would have a better appreciation of it neutral

If I would have made friends with people soley based on their taste in music I'd be a very lonely person.

Most of my friends listen to what many on this forum would refer to as shit hop so talking to them about music is a problem.

But the music scene is so crappy nowadays thaat even the ones who believe that Justin Timberlake is god's gift to music disbelief are having doubts about a lot of the crap that's out there, namely T- pain and Mims.

Alot of the people know like mindless screamo or shit hop, so they are not even worth talking to about music. My best friend though likes alot of the same stuff as me and is very open minded.

i know too many people who either only like crappy top-40 hip-hop, or else dismiss the form altogether and start sighing and rolling their eyes every time someone starts rapping in a song. people need to relax: it's just music.

Since music is such a huge part of my life, that means when friends come over, we usually hang out, have a few drinks, and listen to music. Naturally, my friends are going to like the same type of music as I do.

No, that's not me but it certainly sounds like me. I don't lower myself to listen to shit hop so why would I lower myself to hang out with folks that listen to it either. Actually, when we get bored, a favorite past-time is to talk about shit hop like a dog. That's always fun. Why not make something entertaining about something that's extremely boring. I did it with Shitney Houston first, so I just continued it on with shit hop. Unfortunately, I do have some friends that like Shitney. It's fun to talk about her with them though....them making jokes for her and me making jokes against her. lol

I stay fairly knowledgeable about most genres so I can talk about a variety of music my friends enjoy but I can’t talk to anyone about the music I really enjoy. They either don’t have a clue what I like or don’t know anything about it to speak on it.

It’s almost like my music is a secret as I can’t share it with anyone because they just don’t dig it. sigh

If I threw a party and played what I liked everyone would either be sitting on the couch or looking at me like, “what the hell is this?”

When music is your favorite past-time, you take it real serious when something shitty comes along and ruins it.

why? does bad music somehow infect what you consider to be good music? i don't give a damn about shitty music. i've been so far removed from what the mainstream considers "noteworthy music", i couldn't even hum a song from the top ten from the last, oh, two or three years? i don't care. i likes what i likes.

Most of them though feels nostalgic whenever they get in my ride, they think my music reminds them of their childhood/parents/grandparents and they always ask me to make a mix CD for them(according to what they request).

Yes, it does infect it. The reason is, because of shit hop, there is no other good forms of R&B being made such as funk, disco, or house. Sure, you can choose not to listen to shit hop and "let folks have their thing and you have your thing" but my thing is gone and it's because of shit hop.

I can fully understand what you are saying if you were talking about country, rock, classical, or any other genres but those have not killed and kept out the genre that I love.....some fast uptempo form of R&B, whether it be funk, disco, or house. Even new forms of fast R&B can't come out or be invented because of shit hop. Let's face it, shit hop just needs to die. It's not a matter of other genres living with it because they can't live it, they get no airplay because of it.

Yeah, I could listen to my old music but there comes a time (which is here already) that it gets hard to find something old that I don't already have. Plus, it's just rediculous that good new music can't be made.

Music is not, like, the end-all/be-all of friendship for me. I have my own style and my closest friends respect that.

Even still, I'm so diverse I find that I can talk about almost anything with anyone, anyway.

The guys on the dock (mostly 20-somethings) talk about rap and I come on saying how much I hate rap and let them know I listen to rock (I don't bother to mention jazz or funk). At first they trip and say it's "white boy music" that makes you a serial killer, then when they hear shit like Hendrix, Living Colour, Funkadelic, Fishbone and Spyz coming from my sound system they say "Ahh shit, those are niggers!" eek
