Believe me, she could fuck it up. Kashif is OK but was never one of my favorites. I love house music too and I remember when she did house remixes of her songs in the early 90s....weak, weak, weak. lol

So,if she were to do a funk album produced by George Clinton, you still wouldn't like it?? lol

It's just according to how it sounded. George ain't never been one of my favorites. He has a lot of stuff I like but I've heard many of his tracks that I don't like also. So he's not really a good example.

If she had been produced by Prince back before his artsy/fartsy period, or by Rick James before his "Glow" period, back when both those guys were on fire, I might have like her music. I mean, damn, I love Vanity 6 and those girls can't sing a lick but the music is great....which is all I've ever been concerned with.

If she had been a little older and had come out in the 1970s, she would have been an excellent disco diva because she has the voice for that type of music. If she had waited a few years later until around 1989, she could have been a great house diva who would have been perfect doing stuff like Martha Wash was doing with Black Box. However, whatever she made, she would need strong producers that only gave a damn about making strong music and not "whitening" it up to for mass appeal.

She´s got one of the most amazing voices. Love some of her songs.

"Thinking About You" (with Kashif) (1985) music

Vainandy,I swear, even you would like this song if you heard it wink

It's not a song I'm crazy about myself (I found Kashif's music a little stiff, personally), though I thought "You Give Good Love" was a fine effort.

I find it interesting that Whitney Houston's music went from nauseatingly pop in the mid-1980s to shit-hop tracks in the late 1990s and the part of this decade.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

That's because she's a sellout in every sense of the word. In the 1980s, you had to whiten your music if you wanted to be pop. In the 1990s, shit hop was loved by white kids so it became the new pop.

All she's ever been concerned with is selling music to the widest audience possible. I doubt she even has a musical preference of her own that she truly loves, has a passion for, and would never sacrifice or water down. She makes my asshole just wanna spray milky diarreah shit. lol

in her defense,though...it was Clive Davis who was guiding her career all those years, until the late 90s.He's the one who made her "tone down the blackness",so to speak wink He wanted her to make pop music that appealed to the widest audience possible. That's one thing I hate about the 80s: it was the "crossover decade".In the 70s,an R&B artist made R&B music....a funk artist/band made funk music. If it crossed over, fine, but the artists didn't water down the music for mass consumption.

I like Whitney's first two albums, though.Ironically,it was when she tried to make real R&B ('I'm Your Baby Tonight' album, mostly produced by LA and Babyface) that I sorta lost interest.I didn't care for that album.

However, she was a grown woman and a talented singer. Grown folks are supposed to have a mind of their own and not be able to be persuaded so easily. That's why it's against the law to sleep with someone under the age of 18. Their mind isn't developed yet. lol

Also, being a talented singer, if she were any kind of "artist" she would have more pride and passion in her craft and would never tone it down and sacrifice it. I'm not even a singer or musician but can you see someone telling me to tone my shit down and change it into something it's not. I would have picked up the nearest broom I could find and beaten that old wrinkled up prune's ass from one end of that recording studio to another. I would have been just like Florence on "The Jeffersons" when she beat those producers asses in a recording studio that time. lol

And what really pissed me off is when I found out that her mother was a backup singer for Elvis and Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick are related to her. It's not like Shitney was the average girl off the streets with no connections who had no choice but do what the producers said or take a walk. Miss goodie two shoes had respected connections in the music business that could easily have gotten her a deal somewhere else and she still sold out.

Exactly. Except it was the late 80s only that was the crossover era. There were tons of R&B acts in the early 80s that never crossed over and had no desire to.

I like Whitney's first two albums, though.Ironically,it was when she tried to make real R&B ('I'm Your Baby Tonight' album, mostly produced by LA and Babyface) that I sorta lost interest.I didn't care for that album.

At that time, when I heard she was trying to get a little "blacker", I just laughed. She only did it because she had recently been booed at the "Soul Train Music Awards". Once again, she showed that she had no strength of her own. If she had such a passion for making crossover music, she never would have tried to blacken it up just because someone booed her. She would have just continued on, business as usual.

When you hear some of her later 1990s/early 2000s music -- "Heartbreak Hotel,"It's Not Right But It's Okay," "My Love Is Your Love" and "One of Those Days" -- Whitney Houston was using the more "urban" sounds, with samples, hip-hop producers and even rappers. Like vainandy said, by the start of the decade that was considered more radio-friendly because rap styles became more common in pop music.

Like vain said, if Houston's preference was the obviously pop, "How Will I Know"-type songs that still would have been her default sound. But by this time, she only had one or so of those songs on her albums. Like he said, she was doing whatever was hot to sell albums.

If Whitney Houston was incorporating hip-hop sounds, rappers and producers into her music circa 1989, it would have been considered "too black." However, those styles dominated the pop music scene in the late 1990s and the start of this decade so it was actually considered "safe." Hence, vainandy's deduction about Houston cartering her music to the masses and not her own personal creativity.

I love her so damn much, I just want her to get her shit together and get back to doing what she was given that voice for in the first place...SINGING!!!!

I don't care what you say about her choice in music or why she chose what she chose, you can't deny that powerhouse of a voice of hers! The girl could've sang "The Howdy Doody" song and still brought women to their feet and grown men to tears!!

As Prince once said, "Those kinds of cars don't pass you every day." cool
