Songs about sin Totally random, I'm putting together a compilation where there are songs about specific "sins" -- i.e., the "deadly" ones, wrath, lust, envy, pride, greed, gluttony and sloth.
Any favorite songs out there that you think perfectly demonstrate any of the 7 mortal sins? (And songs like Do Me Baby don't count... I'm goin' deeper than just sex when it comes to "lust") Can't wait to see what you all suggest! Don't post much but I'm a regular on the board and love reading everyone's thoughts on P and other great music. kevin

WRATH: IMO, these are songs where the performer obviously is mad and the purpose is vengeance and great anger. The best songs tend to be uptempo, aggressive and have a bit of an edge: Examples: Kool Moe Dee "Let's Go," Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg "Dre Day," James Brown "The Big Payback." LUST: The songs that best exemplify this sin, IMO, are songs involving someone or some people who are married getting it on with someone outside the marriage. Ballads make the most sense. Examples: Billy Paul "Me and Mrs. Jones," Shirley Murdock "As We Lay," Atlantic Starr "Secret Lovers." ENVY: Obviously, these are songs where performers wish they had someone or something in their lives that someone else possesses, though they also can be about someone singing in a third-party sense on envy. Examples: Gerald Levert "How Many Times," Pebbles "Backyard," Gladys Knight and The Pips "If I Were Your Woman." PRIDE: This can go a lot of ways, but it has to be a song -- not just a lyric -- about someone boasting on himself or herself. The song has to have an immodest sense of self-esteem. Examples: The Time "Jerk Out," Guy "Piece of My Love," Barry White "Practice What You Preach." GREED: This can overlap into other sins (lust, envy, pride) but in reality it needs to be about someone with excessive desire to get paid. Examples: The O'Jays "For the Love of Money," Puff Daddy/The Notorious B.I.G./The Lox/Lil' Kim "It's All about The Benjamins," Gwen Guthrie "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent." GLUTTONY: It's natural to think about food but in the context of music it can be anyone who does anything excessively or with great capacity to where it's detrimental. Examples: Barry White "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe," Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love," The Chi-Lites "Stoned out of My Mind." SLOTH: In the context of music, it's someone who is simply slack, one who doesn't put any work into a relationship or life. Examples: Janet Jackson "What Have You Done for Me Lately," Otis Redding "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," The Temptations "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)." [Edited 8/21/07 12:50pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!
