Good topic! I'd say that New Order and Depeche Mode are great singles bands. Roxette is another.

TRON

Almost all of the teen pop, middle of the road rock and half-assed rap albums these days have a few singles and the rest filler.

But their singles aren't good either!

Earth Wind and Fire will probably always be one of my favorite bands, despite the fact that I feel a 2 cd hits compilation covers all the bases for them. I always felt that the majority of their albums had a bit of filler in them.

That's interesting because I've always felt that EW&F's many hit singles DON'T do them justice. They have many experimental album tracks that are less "polished" than the radio-friendly singles that they are known for.I'm talking about songs like "Drum Song"(1974),"See The Light"(1975),"Spirit"(1976) and "Runnin"(1977).

Not agree, since maybe Black Celebration (1987!), Depeche Mode's album are very importants ( the first were terrible imo) , same thing for New Order's Low Life , even if they have been unequal since this one

Billy Idol comes to mind it's like his White Wedding or Dancing With Myself are Great Tunes but his albums really aren't that great thru and thru. Another one was the Vapors who had only one good song on their album and that was Turning Japanese.

Black Celebration, Some Great Reward and Violator are all great albums, but I think they choose the best songs to release as singles. New Order has so many singles that didn't even make albums, and I don't think they have too many album tracks that measure up to their singles.
