I'm just grateful to him for bringing Kut Klose to my attention, 'cause I had it bad for Athena Cage razz

Athena has good vocals. The duet Nobody that she performed with Keith is classic.

And I grew up with one of the singers from Divine, another group that came and went. Our families go to the same church, so we're always in touch some way or another. There was a lot of red tape going on that prevented them from coming out with any more recordings. And with her voice, she doesn't even sing anymore sad

Here's their video:

With the exception of those annoying electronic drums, I dug a lot of Keith Sweat's stuff, though he always sounded like he had a real bad head cold.

nod Valid point. The electronic drums usuage was bit much but the refine element of his material still shined through.

See, that's why I never liked his music. Drums and a funky bass line are what absolutely make a song for me. If the drums and bass are weak, as far as I'm concerned, you might as well just throw the whole song out.

There was also a group around the same time on the label called "Ladae" (or something like that). If I remember correctly, Al B. Sure had something to do with the project. They were a boy band with a pretty charismatic lead singer. I heard some of their stuff, but I don't think it ever got released. They had a lot of potential.

Ladae! had two albums. I was always a huge fan of "Party 2Nite," which contained a sample of "Show You the Way to Go." The "Fabulous Flava" remix with Chubb Rock is the best.

I saw Keith in concert and like Babyface he was surprisingly good.

Me neither. At least not the majority of the ones that came out after 1984.

Does he ever do uptempo stuff?

Yeah, but it's weak sounding. It's hard to explain. Maybe it's the type drums or drum machines on the songs. I guess you could maybe call it new jack sounding. I don't know. It just sounds weak. I'll put it this way, it sure as hell ain't funk. lol

yeah, i know what you mean about it being weak but i think i'd be willing to give it a chance. he seems cool to me.

I liked his self titled album a lot in 1996. Twisted and Nobody were good songs to like and I remember the album being sold out when I was trying to buy a copy for my cousin's birthday.

I liked keith's first two albums but on the second album he had make you
sweat as the lead single. And yes the drum machine on that song was very
mac cheesy but the ballads on the album were up to par. I kind of loss track of
him after the second album as he started doing more hybrid hip hop/r&b stuff with the likes of joe public, snoop dogg, ll cool j, lil mo, etc.

I think you really lost track, because that just wasn't the case. There is very little hip-hop at all on his third album. Even the album version of "Why Me Baby" is a ballad. Keith Sweat was a true new jack artist from the beginning, but he didn't stray into what vainandy would call "ship-hop" until his 6th album.

And FWIW, "Make You Sweat" is perfection! That song was part of one of my favorite summers of the last 20 years. #1 R&B hits in the summer (and early fall) of 1990:

All I Do Is Think of You - Troop
You Can't Deny It - Lisa Stansfield
My, My, My - Johnny Gill
Make You Sweat - Keith Sweat
Can't Stop - After 7
Vision of Love - Mariah Carey
Jerk Out - The Time
Feels Good - Tony! Toni! Toné!
Lies - En Vogue
Crazy - The Boys
Thieves in the Temple - Prince
Giving You the Benefit - Pebbles
So You Like What You See - Samuelle

Good times, good times...

See, I knew it was the drums I didn't like. They just don't pound hard enough and sound "fake" sounding. Prince's drum machines of the early 80s had a stronger sound. They even had an echo to them. Then again, I've always heard that Prince mixed real drums with drum machines so maybe that's how they got their strength.

Of course it is. What does that have to do with the Troop version being a #1 hit in the summer of 1990?

Keith Sweat does have one up-tempo song that I like. Anyone remember "Keep It Coming"? That song was FUNKY. Especially the bassline, But he screwed it up when he did a remake of it for the USA (Olympic Basketball) Dream Team.

Shades - wait a minute - is that the group with four cute chicks (especially the one with the short haircut) who came out with a record that used Bernard Wright's sample and had lyrics like, "what car do you drive?". In the video, they were driving in a mustang (I think) and they were on the beach...

Yup, they had one album and two singles, the album was actually pretty good but they were on MOTOWN and we all know that Motown is the worst at everything. The singles they had were "Dont Tell Me" and "Serenade".

The thing about the Shades' song that used the Bernard Wright sample is that LL Cool J used the same sample for the "Loungin'" remix with Total. And both songs were out around the same time. I don't think that helped SHades too much. I did like "Serenade" too.

nod It's a good song, but I think the "Jungle Boogie" sample should get some of the credit.
