80's hits that didn't have a music video in the 80's you pretty much had to have a music video for your song to have any chance at a top 40 hit but a few songs in the 80's managed to become hits despite not having a video
i can only think of a couple Soldier Of Love by Donny Osmond-didn't have a music video but managed to hit #2 in 1989 on the billboard hot 100 Amanda by Boston-in 1986 reached #1 despite not having a video can u guys think of any others? orger Formerly known as Kip Winger

You may want to qualify this by choosing songs that came out from 1984 forward. The video age took flight in 1983 (thanks to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" videos), and until the end of the summer of that year it was common for artists to have big hits without a video.
I'll name some songs: Eugene Wilde "Don't Say No (Tonight)" Glenn Jones "We've Only Just Begun (the Romance Is Not Over)" Stevie Wonder "Skeletons" Keith Sweat "Make It Last Forever" New Edition "Crucial" [Edited 8/20/07 5:01am] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. surprisingly, most of the 'Thriller' singles didn't have videos: "Human Nature" "Wanna Be Startin Something" "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" "The Girl Is Mine" perhaps he was trying to avoid overexposure?

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember a video. Maybe I'm thinking about "Go Home" not having a video. I recall there was a Stevie Wonder song from "In Square Circle" or "Characters" that did not have a video. New Edition's "Crucial" peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart in 1989 -- I would say that qualifies as a hit song. Re: Stevie Wonder. Maybe the song I'm thinking about is "You Will Know." I remember seeing it on BET back in the day. It had people in a lot of different scenarios to match the lyrics of the song. It was decent (at the time). The Police - King of Pain
Prince - Purple Rain Prince - Take Me With U (Technically, these songs did not have a video specifically made for MTV, yet some outlets used clips from the movie as videos.) Madonna - Angel Madonna - Holiday (did not have a video at the time of the original release; however, a video was made for a live performance from the movie "Truth or Dare") Journey - Suzanne Journey - Be Good To Yourself Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love

Inside Outside and Promise Me by the Cover Girls back in 1987, basically they had 5 singles from that first album but since "fever records" was an indie and still is, they had no $$ to make the videos, one of their videos is shot in Coney Island, another one was shot at a photo booth/studio and the one for "Because of You" was shot in a club, but it was empty because they couldnt pay extras. Probably most of the funk hits of the early 1980s that never crossed over. I've noticed that even when BET or BET J plays old songs from the 1980s, they play very few from the early 1980s. It's usually those damn late 1980s ones they play. Andy is a four letter word.
