Joe Tex is one of Mike's main influenecs that many folks don't know about.

If any of you all have seen The Jacksons: An American Dream, their is a seen of them perfoming the Tops hit "(Sugar Pie Hunny Bunch) I Can't Help Myself." Well Marlon is tryin' to do a mike stand trick and messes up. Papa Joes then says, "thats not how Joe Tex does it, Mike show him how Joe Tex does it."

Also the J5 used to perform "Skinny Legs and All" around 1967-1968 on the chitlin' circuit. I'm pretty sure they've seen him up close many timeas and probally performed on the same bill as him back in the mid-late 1960's.
