2007,08,16 PFunk at San Manuel Casino I caught thus show last night. It wasn't really promoted as a fest, but the tees stated FUNK NATION FUNK FEST. There weren't any band names or dates on them. I copped a camouflage FUNKADELIC w/ (UNCLE JAM on back). Security was tight. Metal detectors, detailed searches flashlights in ladies purses) and wanding. I got stopped cuz the belt clip on my cellphone had worn the leather away and the cop though it was a knife. He said I was being watched and was ready to take me down.
The crowd was old school black mexican and white. 21 and over (cuz it's a casino). They started promptly at 7:30 PM. Casino priority was to get folks out to the disco and gaming floor ASAP, so PFUNK had at most a 90 minute window. Sets were limited in sequence below, Mary Jane Girls - awesome musical performance; guitarist was guy from Chaka Khan's band, Ricky Rhodes, I think? Threw in some Rick James tunes, but no point in "Mary Jane" if you can't fire up a joint. Frightening to see portly middle-aged women in skimpy lingerie. Played 45 minutes. Zapp - A freaking travesty. Obviously, no original members. Played more covers than orignal tunes, Even so they were only teases. Except for the keyboardists and drummer this was more a dance troupe of morbidly obese black men showing off distended swollen bellies UGH!!!. Guitarist walked around grabbing axe by the neck and didn't play much. UGH!! times 2. No bass. too much keyboard bass!! UGH!! times 3. Too many costume changes The Ultimate UGH!!! Played 50 - 60 minutes Lakeside - Troube Trouble Trouble. Too long setting up. Singers MIA. Band had to vamp for 20 minutes and did a very poor job of it. Singers finally showed. They really threw down, but only on 2 songs. A long verson of "Fantastic Voyage" and something else. Too bad! I yelled for them to take their late asses home. That was more than an hour and was eating in PFunk time. PFunk - good set, but nothing new. I enjoyed showing off as a hardcore Maggot singing along. They almost got a full 2 hrs. Let's see now "Cosmic Slop", "We Want The Funk", "S,G, Get Off your Ass" Crunk chants, "Up For Down Stroke", "not just knee deep", "Motor Booty", "Flashlight", "Freak of the Week>>Ants in My Pants" "Atomic Dog". blah blah blah. No "Maggot Brain" or "Dog Star", but no time for "WLS oldies". Overall it was cool for a short show. Oh! I forgot Jimmy Walker(JJ from Good Times) was MC. He was funny and kept it flowing. The same bill comes to the Greek again in LA on Sat. I'm going instead to the Sunset Junction Street Faire test

Might run into you in Silverlake. tA You got me working hard to recruit you as a Harper fan. LOL Did I mention the inordinate amount of starlets and wannabees in his fanbase? Like the levels you'd see at a Prince show! test

Did I mention the inordinate amount of starlets and wannabees in his fanbase? Like the levels you'd see at a Prince show! No recruiting necessary it's just the logistics of it all. I could care less about starlets and much less about wannabees. As a matter of fact, the wannabee-factor would be a major deterrent.
