Didn't know Elvis had "haters" on this board. Did you take a poll or something? [Edited 8/11/07 23:05pm] My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

http://www.nytimes.com/20...GtCMVoAIPw maybe your the elvis hater here not us i liked elvis his more famous stuff like suspicous minds hound dogg etc and for him being a racist maybe , he probaly was thought wrongly you learn some basis principles from your parents for example a friend of mine is racist even though he listens to black music( mj prince marvin gaye among others ) but stil every collord person is bad in his eyes , ( uses lame excuse some of them are ok but then again he looks down on them) but his parents are like that so if elvis was racist he might got it from his enviroment

I'm quite the opposite of an Elvis hater. I thought he was extraordinarily talented, and perhaps one of the 4 or 5 greatest singers ever
But whenever Elvis is mentioned on this site, the "haters" come out with their usaul rhetoric: he "stole" our music, he was "racist", etc, etc. And someone never fails to quote that tired Public Enemy lyric from 2 decades ago (which Chuck D himself has backed off from ) #SOCIETYDEFINESU

There was a (now discredited) rumour back in the '50s that Elvis supposedly made a racist statement, and since then, there seems to have grown a a lot of rhetoric and folklore (also thoroughly discredited by biographical research), to the above effect as you outline. It's sad that such folklore has been taken onboard as 'fact' to a certain extent, especially when it seems most black performers of his generation (including James Brown, BB King, Little Richard and many others) had great respect for Elvis as a performer and person. It's interesting that Elvis is perhaps the single most controversial artist mentioned to any great extent on the Org. Any thread dealing with him seems to attract more negative comments and divided opinions than any other. Not bad for a completely non-political (in public), generally inoffensive all-round singer, light film actor and latterday cabaret entertainer now 30 years gone ... Still, like him or not, his reputation has lasted over 50 years so far, so I'd say his stature is pretty secure, even if his true impact and meaning has perhaps become obscured by time.

This argument is so old and tired.
Unfortunately, many folks on this board (and in the general population) are just too lazy to do any research on anything. They're quite willing to accept things as they lay on the surface because it's easy. I did a post on this issue last year (with supporting info from a poster named Eileen): The Elvis "Quote" Myth The link in my post used in association with this statement... A Calvin Newborn tribute site that mentions the Newborn's relationship with Elvis: ...should be substitued with this one - http://yellowdogrecords.c...raphy.html (the original one has expired) Even with all this data supplied, i'm sure this topic will continue to resurface in all its inaccurate glory. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Quote from linked article -
In Memphis the two African-American newspapers, The Memphis World and The Tri-State Defender, hailed him as a “race man” — not just for his music but also for his indifference to the usual social distinctions. Ha. I like that. That's what they called Duke Ellington back in the '20 and '30s, when the expression was fashionable

The point is...? YES he did.. but michael took elements and made it his OWN.. and even better then james brown and lil richard.. thats what a GREAT artist like michael does... and so many young artist today.. try to copy michael.. but they have NOT been able to perform better then MJ... My point is MICHAEL had a bigger impact on society then elvis... and stil has influence even to this day.... how many young people/artist do you say they were inspired by elvis The average person can sing a MJ song... but Not know one Elvis song.. why... because elvis only had an impact on white people during his time period.. MICHAEL'S impact was on every race, young and old... rich and poor michael's impact will never go away... its been 20 plus years since thriller.. and Prisoners in some foreign country was performing MJ's video in Jail. I doubt anyone would be singing a Elvis song....

im too lazy to edit my last post, but i wanna add that
Elvis inadvertedly used Black music to become popular. His claim to fame isn't his own alleged virile uses of music But because pop culture at the time was only white friendly. Doesn't mean he was racist, just the cats that where listening to him and promoting him. See the culprit isn't Elvis its record producers like John Hammond, who like an infectious germ, leached off of black artist and used them, because they were black. Elvis has nothing to do with the hardships of the begginning/struggling black musicians, he was just a product. The evil doer here is the Record Companies... thats it aint different today also I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

I know that if a song sounds good... i will like it.. and there is NOT a elvis song that i can say.. that i thought sound good... its NOT about age and experience.. to know and enjoy a nice song.... Michael's music is seriously timeless.... elvis is very dated...and you have to like that genre to enjoy it... but anyone can enjoy a handful of MJ songs... he's very Eclectic Im not saying elvis isn't great in his own right... but im saying michael is the biggest artist in HISTORY...

You like Michael Jackson better than Elvis - cool. You believe he is the biggest superstar - cool. What I'm saying, and what you and Lothan don't seem to get is that you can't speak for an entire races/races to back up you statement/belief. And I repeat, if you haven't gone door to door throughout the world polling people, you cannot generalize. Period.
And with age does come wisdom. Trust me on that My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

How old are you?
And with age does come wisdom. Trust me on that Like I said in my post, there is a way to tell Elvis' popularity back then by simply following the charts from that time period and I also said that I can only formulate my opinion on the popularity of Elvis in the Black community by the people I know. But seriously, does one need to poll people to measure the popularity of say, the Beatles?

Desparate act to stir up arguments(hence; the "haters" disclaimer when nobody hated or even worried about him). Poor type of agenda, really And about Alisa/Lothan's comments; its pretty obvious who's more relevent. Poll or not [Edited 8/12/07 16:08pm]

And with age does come wisdom. Trust me on that YOur not saying anything.. that makes elvis a bigger star then michael.. just because white society wants to claim elvis is the greatest doesnt' mean anything... influence on our culture speaks for itself... and who has the most impact.. and that is MICHAEL JACKSON... everyone to this day is still trying to be the next MJ or is influenced by him... even robin thick, pharrell, JUstin T, Beyonce, usher, omarion, ciara, britney spears,

i mean what does it matter anyway. saying one or the other doesn't mean a thing because it will forever only be an Opinion. Theres no way to tell whos the more relevent artist unless you categorize a worldwide poll. christ just letitgo I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned
