Honestly, I like (not Love) The Beatles music and some John Lennon stuff...
IMO, he's very much overrated by music fans...much like Hendrix and U2. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

He'll be remembered for his attitude, his triumphs, his wisdom, his charm, his wit and humour, his musicianship, his politics, his songwriting, his foresight, but most of all for his legacy.....

You made my point brotha...Jimi could play, but where's the sexy? where's the singing voice? where's the prettymaness? Where's the songwriting? He could play guitar, but that doesn't cut it for me...bring more to the table... Prince, as much credit as this brotha gets around here, STILL is underrated as a musician and overall McNastyfied Mess that he is... Loved John Lennon. Right up there with Bob Marley. Cried my eyes out when he was kiled.

Miles said: I really like most of Lennon's Beatles work, but only like very selective Lennon solo tracks. Partly due to the then-fashionable primal scream therapy he undertook at the end of the '60s, far too many of his solo songs imo come across as the naive, out of touch with the real world musings of an incredibly self-obsessed millionaire and his sometime loving wife.
By his own admission, he deliberately drew on himself for his solo songs, which perhaps explains why his solo work is so much weaker overall imo than his Beatles work, as he seems to have become an even more isolated figure after the Beatles finished than before, and so had less and less new experiences to fuel his new song-writing. More or less , the direction he John took on his solo material had a lot to do with his sensibilities at the time. While in the Beatles and writing with Paul, he was more focused and had oppurtunity to different input on songs then his own which impacts the directs of the music. Miles said: My favourate solo Lennon tracks -
Cold Turkey, Instant Karma, Jealous Guy (tho I prefer the Bryan Ferry version, which I view as the classic version ), Watching the Wheels, Nobody Told Me and possibly my favourate, No. 9 Dream. I would have to agree with you as well. These are timeless classics.

Co-sign. I felt that the tribute song that Elton John & Bernie wrote :Empty Garden was so befitting. Here are the Lyrics: What happened here As the New York sunset disappeared I found an empty garden among the flagstones there Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And now it all looks strange It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain And what's it for This little empty garden by the brownstone door And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And we are so amazed we're crippled and we're dazed A gardener like that one no one can replace And I've been knocking but no one answers And I've been knocking most all the day Oh and I've been calling oh hey hey Johnny Can't you come out to play And through their tears Some say he farmed his best in younger years But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear Who lived there He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls We hear, we hear your name Johnny can't you come out to play in your empty garden

The Plastic Ono band and the Imagine albums are masterpieces; the rest of his solo career is blah...(at least until Double Fantasy, which has some great tracks)
By the way, I don't like Imagine that much, I can't stand its lyrics... PD: PAUL WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAV BEATLE [Edited 8/17/07 15:15pm]

Plastic Ono Band is probably #2, but the best solo Beatle record is All Things Must Pass. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Elton has said he almost never/ever performs it because it is too painful and too special, and its true i have checked Eltons set lists through the years and he has almost never played the song live. Obviously the Lennon influence on the world grew because of his tragic death, its that way with almost anyone, but unlike many others that died tragically and were more famous after death, Lennon was an infuence before his death. But it is always best to seperate Lennon the Musician and Lennon the man, two very different people. I do feel at the time of his death at age 40 Lennon was finally growing up as a man, being responsible and things like that, and you could hear it in that last interview done that morning. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
