I've been saying he's the KING. smile

He was one of the first black entertainers to be widely accepted by the world even if he was considered a threat in the US. So popular he had audiences packed in London, France, Russia, Germany and New Zealand even.

A LOT of musicians and pop stars wouldn't even be a blip without the contributions this man made. He said it so personally and I don't blame him.

"I AM THE ARCHITECT! I AM THE INNOVATOR! I AM THE EMANCIPATOR!"

Listen to him, he's telling the truth. headbang WOOOO! SHUT UP! lol

I think they are from that movie. And the title track was 'The Girl can't Help It' which was written and performed by Little Richard, I think. He wrote so many amazing Rock & Roll classics, and had lost the copyrights to them. It just so happens that these songs were part of the ATV catalogue that Michael Jackson purchased, and Mike returned Little Richard's copyrights back to him. He did not sell them. Mike GAVE them back to him.

Michael tried to give it back to Sly but Sly said "no, brother, it's cool". Sly now says he hates himself for doing so.

Little Richard's kickass, but please, let's not turn this into a _____ vs. Elvis thread.

Elvis Presley
Chuck Berry
Jerry Lee Lewis
Little Richard
Buddy Holly

There is no one King of Rock. They ALL were. Rock music as we know it would not exist without the contributions of any one of these men. You remove something from the puzzle, and whatever we'd be listening to now, it wouldn't be this. You can't pit these artists against each other because they were responsible for different things in Rock's genesis. Let them share the crown.

Well yeah he was freebasing at the time so yeah the drugs may have clouded his judgment. confused

Such a shame because Sly was a rare talent. sad It took him over twenty years to realize how loved he was. confused

Miles

I LOVES me some vintage Richard! 'Lucille' is for me one of the best records ever made.

And if anyone deserves the title of 'King of Rock n' Roll', it would be Little Richard, as for me he sums up the energy of that music better than most, even if he couldn't take it to the next phase like JB etc went on to.

Yes, Chuck Berry was an excellent artist and very under-rated songwriter, Elvis was great but was always a wider ranging artist than 'just' rock and roll, I love Jerry Lee Lewis, but I consider him a little more in the country music world overall, beyond the obvious hits.

And without too much of a music history lesson, remember that even tho he brought his own style, Richard came after earlier pioneers like Roy Brown, Wynonie Harris, Louis Jordan, all of whom of were excellent artists and live performers in their own right, and should imo be remembered as being more than just openers of the way for later artists... smile

In fact, in some ways, I'd be tempted to say Muddy Waters was as much the King of Rock n' Roll as Richard. Muddy had the first truly great up-tempo electric blues band by 1952 at latest.

But then, Muddy didn't have the outrageous personality that is Little Richard - the original Prince! Compare photos of the Richard in the '50s and P c. mid-'80s, and all becomes clear. biggrin

So much great music! cool

During the Purple Rain Mania in '84, Little Richard said this about Prince - "He's ME!"

I loved Little Richard in "Down & Out in Beverly Hills".
