Not a fan of his...but I'm glad he has found a new employer. Maybe he can actually get a hit now.

Its not really a move, since EMI owns BlueNote so he really still has the same label. But Blue Note suits him because he will be able to do what he wants and not what a label wants, dont expect hits and video play though, Blue Note still is a very small label, but they can do go marketing and they will focus more on the artist, I mean they did it with Norah Jones, though her "blow up" was a fluke, Blue Note did back her with $$$ to tour and build a following and thats what Van Hunt needs a label that will invest in him so he can play shows.

Essentially, that was my first thought. Is this cat changing his direction or what's up?

Blue note has branched into other areas on occasion which is why im saying that dont expect Van Hunt to be popping up on MTV and on radio, thats not gonna happen. BUT blue note can back him with the dollars to tour, play clubs, whatever he has to do to build that reputation and following. This is a great move for him, but playing live is where its gonna have to start. It was the same way for Norah, those of you like me, who are in NYC know that Norah was a freuqent live performer at local clubs, bars etc from 1998 till she got signed and even after she got signed, she was selling her demos at the gigs for 10 bucks and opening for Joan Rivers! But thats what Van hunt is gonna have to do, get out their and play, and play, and play.

Forgive me b/c I'm not all up on it, but what's wrong with Blue Note branching out a bit? Aren't they still primarily a jazz label? confused

Sorry but i have to TOTALLY 190,000% disagree with that. If youre viewing Blue Note signing Norah as a form of selling out or the end of a label, that is WAY off. I look at Blue Note as i look at the "Lost Highway" label and the starbucks label, they all are supporting MUSIC and artists, the whole NORAH blowing up thing was a fluke and she'd be the first to tell you, i remember her saying one time she was surprised that even a thousand people wanted to hear her play or buy her cd. So blue note having artists is not SELLING OUT or destroying the label, MOTOWN signing and releasing artists like Lloyd and Tank, now thats selling out and the end of a label. Blue note is still supporting artists and real players, they arent signing no talents, they are mainly braodening their field.

Nothing.
They've had to expand to survive in today's Jazz as the red-headed stepchild market.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek for the most part.

Her demos cd was 10 bucks the show was more, mainly because Joan Rivers was on the bill

It never was that good for him, unfortunately.

But 1) he played a larger gig earlier in the evening, and 2) he gave a helluva show.

Blue Note seems to be a good fit for him.

Yeah, every time I've seen him, the price has been $12-17, which is good because it's not like getting gouged every time you want to see someone you like play. He was awesome both times I saw him last year, and I'm glad to hear that he's got a label that might just actually RESPECT him this time around.

Maybe it's based on the venue/market or something. I saw him @ the Independent in SF last year for $25 - worth every penny, his show was great love

Tank is a talented dude. He sings well, dances and plays keys and guitar. I think the way he is marketed is mishandled more than his presence on a label.
I agree with the "Lost Highway" perspective of Blue Note. Van Hunt is damn sure talented enough to be on the label. I hope they will do right by him. If he had been promoted right in the forst place, he could be a lot bigger than he is but the industry is anti-musician when it comes to black male artists.
