Someday We'll All Be Free

Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free" should be recognized as an American treasure. There should be an advisory board to screen artists who attempt to cover it. It's that good.

I adore Mr. Hathaway's version, but I'm currently rocking to Aretha Franklin's version from the "Malcolm X" soundtrack. Before launching into the first verse, Ms. Franklin warms up with a few gospel runs, replete with the choir that provides backup vocals throughout. It's awesome.

Lalah Hathaway, Mr. Hathaway's daughter, covered this with Take 6, a few years ago, and did quite the stellar job on it, as well. I have always been partial not only to the chords and lyrics but the bass line, too.

I'm partial to Chaka Khan's version. It's on a 1991 compilation CD titled 'British Electric Foundation: Music Of Quality And Distinction, Volume 2". Well worth hunting down.

I heard the Aretha Franklin version through watching tMalcolm X and it blew me away. It was only later I found out Donny did the original and quite frankly I love both versions.

Hang on to the world as it spins around
Just don't let the spin get you down
Things are moving so fast
Hold on tight and you will last
Keep your self respect
and manly pride
Get yourself in gear
keep your stride
never mind your fears
Brighter days will soon be here
Take it from me
Someday We'll all be free

music

It's a beautiful, beautiful song which inspires and gives us hope.
