Finally...a Luther Vandross 4-CD box set due in October!!

Here's something to add your Christmas lists.I heard that a 4-CD Luther Vandross box set will be released in October.Titled 'Love,Luther',it will contain greatest hits, rare recordings and unreleased tracks, including previously unreleased duets with Frank Sinatra and Beyonce Knowles.

I hope they include his 1983 song "Make Me A Believer",which is probably my favorite Luther Vandross song

http://www.youtube.com/wa...DdapvTfMyc music

Luther was the real King of R&B,as far as I'm concerned and I can't wait for this set.I just hope they don't mess it up.They'd better not only include the hits, but the key album tracks that are so important to fans.

I see you have a picture of the 12" inch mixes collection. I`ve been thinking of buying that for a long time. Is it good?

Have you heard the album "An all star tribute to Luther Vandross"?

It`s a decent collection of covers, i especially liked Mary J Blige`s "Never too much" music

Aretha Franklin and Donna Summer`s tributes was a little disappointing...

Bony James cover is better than the original in my opion of "My Sensitivity. I dont know whos the female artist on the song but the 80's production is HOT.

And clapping to them FINALLY putting Best THings In Life Are Free on a collection..being it was a #1 R&B hit

They should have included "Other side of the world" and "Always and forever"

The selection of hits is acceptable, but i wish they could have included even more rare tracks, especially from his group "Luther" (i see there`s one of their songs there)

"A little disappointing"? Aretha's tribute is downright awful! I have never heard her sound so bad! sad

And that shit won her a Grammy... disbelief

I've been anticipating something like this, but it's pretty botched. It looks like it going to do a good job in covering Luther's 30-something year career and it has most of my favorite tunes. It's missing alot, but I might cop this for the Christmas season. Sony/J Records better do this one right and it betta have some attractive packaging.

This looks much like the tracklisting of Michael's box set. lol

But this does look good because it covers his career from 1978 ("Hot Butterfly") to 2003 ("Shine" and "Take You Home" were recorded that year though it was released in '06). nod

It's a good overall selection of songs. I likely would not have chosen some of those songs for a Luther Vandross compilation, but that's more of a personal choice than absolute outrage. I created my own Luther set recently, and some notable songs I saw missing on this box set are "Little Miracles (Happen Every Day)," "Forever, For Always, For Love," "I'll Let You Slide," "Promise Me," "Always and Forever," "Treat You Right," "She Won't Talk to Me," "I Can Make It Better," "Going in Circles" and "Make Me a Believer."

As for "The Best Things in Life Are Free," that song did reach No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Singles charts in 1992. IMO, it was a song that was carried more by the weight of the all-star collaboration (a duet with Janet Jackson produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with Bell Biv DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant making a guest rap appearance) than the performance. If anything, I look at that as a Janet Jackson song or a Jam and Lewis song highlighting their key proteges plus Luther. I don't see that as a Luther Vandross song.

I created a three-disc compilation of Luther Vandross' music recently for the office, but if I was expanding it to four discs it would look like something like this (NOTE: I did NOT put "The Best Things in Life Are Free" on my set). I generally don't make anthologies in chronological order:

DISC ONE:
1.) 'Til My Baby Comes Home
2.) Never Too Much
3.) The Glow of Love (with Change)
4.) The Best Things in Life Are Free (duet with Janet Jackson)
5.) Don't You Know That?
6.) I Can Make It Better
7.) Give Me the Reason
8.) I'd Rather
9.) The Night I Fell in Love
10.) Treat You Right
11.) The Rush
12.) Since I Lost My Baby
13.) The Other Side of the World
14.) Don't Want to Be a Fool

DISC TWO:
1.) Superstar/Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)
2.) The Closer I Get to You (duet with Beyonce Knowles)
3.) Make Me a Believer
4.) Wait for Love
5.) Bad Boy/Having a Party
6.) Take You Out
7.) She Won't Talk to Me
8.) I Really Didn't Mean It
9.) Think about You
10.) Promise Me
11.) Knocks Me Off My Feet
12.) For You to Love
13.) So Amazing
14.) Here and Now

DISC THREE:
1.) A House Is Not a Home
2.) If This World Were Mine (duet with Cheryl Lynn)
3.) Endless Love (duet with Mariah Carey)
4.) Searching (with Change)
5.) She Loves Me Back
6.) My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)
7.) You're the Sweetest One
8.) Nights in Harlem
9.) Forever, For Always, For Love
10.) The Second Time Around
11.) Going in Circles
12.) Anyone Who Had a Heart
13.) Never Let Me Go
14.) How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye

DISC FOUR:
1.) Power of Love/Love Power
2.) Stop to Love
3.) I'll Let You Slide
4.) Sugar and Spice (I Found Me a Girl)
5.) It's Over Now
6.) Your Secret Love
7.) Any Love
8.) Love Won't Let Me Wait
9.) If Only for One Night/Creepin'
10.) There's Nothing Better than Love (duet with Gregory Hines)
11.) Little Miracles (Happen Every Day)
12.) Sometimes It's Only Love
13.) Always and Forever
14.) Dance with My Father

Personally, I would not add "The Best Things in Life Are Free," but for arguments' sake it could be added if there is not another song that deserves to be listed.

Ledisi made a version "My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)" with Boney James. It appears on the 2005 album "Soul Togetherness 2005." Personally, Luther Vandross' version is one of my favorite songs by him.

Here are some songs that I would have liked to see in this box set:

"Sugar And Spice (I Found Me A Girl)" (1981)---although it wasn't a single,it received some radio airplay.
"You Stopped Loving Me" (1981)
"A Better Love" (1982)---this was actually a single,if I'm not mistaken
"Forever,For Always,For Love" (1982)---I can't believe that this gem isn't included!
"Make Me A Believer" (1983)---a Quiet Storm staple
"I'll Let You Slide" (1983)---I hate when box sets don't include all the hits. With 4 discs, there should be enough room for every Luther Vandross single, such as this one.
"The Other Side Of The World" (1985)---another song that gets attention on Quiet Storm stations
"Because It's Really Love" (1986)
"Little Miracles (Happen Everyday)" (1993)---his 1993 album 'Never Let Me Go' is extremely underrated. This was the first single and it's excellent.
"Love Me Again" (1993)
"How Deep Is Your Love/Love Don't Love Nobody/Never Let Me Go" (1993)

I notice that this set includes "Jump To It" by Aretha Franklin.Good idea,to showcase Luther's productions for other artists.People forget that Luther was a skilled producer. Some other tunes that could have been considered:

"Love Me Right" by Aretha Franklin (1982)
"Get It Right" by Aretha Franklin (1983)
"Every Girl (Wants My Guy)" by Aretha Franklin (1983)
"It's Hard For Me To Say" by Diana Ross (1987)
"That Girl Wants To Dance With Me" by Gregory Hines (1988)

I have "Heart of a hero" on the "Little miracles" cd single, and it`s a fun song, a kinda save-the-world song lol a childen`s choir joins Luther on the chorus, "Oh happy day, this world is for us..." Find the cd single on ebay, it`s worth checking out

I haven` heard "If i was the one" yet

I`ve heard a clip of "The thrill i`m in", and i liked it, it`s available on a compilation
