I agree. IMO, if you're doing an expansive four-disc set at the least every top 20 or top 30 single should be required. In this case, you have quite a few Luther Vandross top 10 songs missing, which makes it odd: "I'll Let You Slide," which peaked at No. 9 in 1983. "I Really Didn't Mean It," No. 6 in 1987. "She Won't Talk to Me," No. 3 in 1988. "Treat You Right," No. 5 in 1990. "The Rush," No. 6 in 1991. "Sometimes It's Only Love," No. 9 in 1992. "Little Miracles (Happen Every Day)," No. 10 in 1993. That's not even counting the top 20 and top 30 singles: "Always and Forever," No. 16 in 1994. "Going in Circles," No. 28 in 1995. "I Can Make It Better," No. 15 in 1996. "Nights in Harlem," No. 29 in 1998. "Think about You," No. 29 in 2003. [Edited 8/15/07 5:43am] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. This is far from being a thorough, complete overview of Luther's career. | |

In a day and age where people virtually can create their own box sets (downloading or purchasing songs for 88 cents on their computer, and creating the package on the right software), there is no excuse why a record company would leave off seven top 10 hits from Luther Vandross' career. It's bad enough when a box set leaves off significant album tracks (Earth, Wind & Fire's "Love's Holiday" and "On Your Face" on "The Eternal Dance"). It's inexcusable when one major hit song is left off (Barry White's "Put in Your Mix" on "Just for You"). But seven top 10 hits and several other top 30 singles? That's ridiculous. What makes it worse is there is plenty of filler that could have been cut from that box set. I'm sorry, but if it came down to it I would put "The Best Things in Life Are Free" on a Janet Jackson compilation because it's a Janet Jackson song -- at worst, it's a "Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' stable of acts teams up with Luther" song.
Then you have plenty of obscure/novelty songs on the box set but yet "Treat You Right" -- which appeared only on the now-deleted "The Best of Luther Vandross ... The Best of Love" and was a top five single -- is not on this compilation. I would say this is an ESSENTIAL set of Luther Vandross songs, but not a COMPLETE set.
