That's The Barkays I've been hipping you too. That's the back cover to their 1984 "Dangerous" album....the one that includes the song, "Freakshow On The Dancefloor".

This is their wildest look ever. You should see the actual album cover. In this picture (from the internet), there is some Chinese writing in a block that is covering something up that you can't see. The guy sitting on the floor in the middle with his legs spread, has a bulge in his pants and he looks like he is sporting an erection. lol

i can't beleive that's them! i should have known that. shame on me. oh well.
wow, i need to see that album cover without the block hehe! lol how is this

album? would i dig it? is it jheri curl nu wave? by the way, don't you think they should have that genre in music stores?? razz

This is veteran funk band the barkays. This photo was from their 1984 album dangerous. The guy who you are talking bout with the one black pants leg and the other white is their lead singer larry dodson who to this day rocks a short blonde crop. This photo demonstrated the band's move to the punk look back in the early eighties. Cameo also dressed punk during this period too.

That's the Bar Kays? eek damn, i'm embarrased because i've been listening to them a lot lately and didn't even recognize them. wow they look so cool. i may need to see if i can find that album too. is it good?

Every single track on that album is good and it's just the type of music that you like....The Barkays with a "new wavier" sound. You would really love "Dirty Dancer".

Freakshow On The Dancefloor
I'm sure you've heard this one. It's kinda like The Barkays' answer to Midnight Star's "No Parking On The Dancefloor" but with a faster tempo.

Make Believe Lovers
One of my favorite slow jams of all time.

Loose Talk
A nice little somewhat funky tune with The Barkays throwing hints as whether or not they are bisexuals, toying with the idea, and making people wonder. You can tell they are Prince fans. lol

Dance, Party, Etc.
Speak of the devil. They were definately Prince fans. This jam is very, very, VERY influenced by Prince's "D.M.S.R."

Dangerous
This one's a decent semi-uptempo type jam. It's my least favorite on the album but I still like it.

Dirty Dancer
This one would definately be right up your alley. It's the most "new wavish" sounding track on the album. Very modern sounding for that era and very uptempo. It even has a slight rock edge to it but with a funky tempo.

Lovers Should Never Fall In Love
A good slow jam. I think you'll like it.

Sex-O-Matic
I'm sure you've heard this one. It's a great uptempo modern 80s sounding track. The 12 Inch version of this song puts the album version to shame though.

We need people who aren't afraid to take chances in R&B. We need funk and some more ass shaking. Some music that's so good, you have to snatch the nearest lady or guy up and have the best sex EVAAAAA!

Think about D-Train "You're The One For Me". That's what I'm talking about! cool

Speaking of which i was listening to this on my way to work this morning!

I agree 100 percent. r&b is just not as much fun as it was in the 80's and everything sounds exactly the same. that's why i fear the "new soul train" i know it will be filled with no talent artists like Akon. no one takes chances any more. Kelis is the most daring r&b artist out now and even she is tame compared to the artist of the 80's!

I listen to day EVERY DAY! I have it on my mp3 player and when the accapella intro comes on, it's time to mindfunk!

The Bar-Kays' "Dirty Dancer" was inspired by Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." It's obvious by the way Larry Dodson sings the song, particularly the part "She's a dirty dancer" in the first and second verses, with the MJ-like phrasing.

There are also some one-note acts who I would call "jheri curl new wave," such as Bryan Loren ("Lollipop Luv") and Dreamboy ("Don't Go").

When I was in Jr. High and my freshman year in high school, I wore Jheri curls. Out here in L.A., the look dancerella is refering to was everywhere. Many brothers had this look out here. Even though I wore curls, I never dressed that way. I leaned towards a more darker, pre GOTH look. And I never could get with the sprays and shit u had to put on your hair when u had a curl. I should have been the poster child of Worlds of Curls products cuz I had all of their items! It became a hella drag when girls I dated didn't like shit on their hands cuz they were always wanting to have their hands in my hair cuz they dug my hair. And then it was like "eeeeww, what's that?!" I knew then the activator HAD to go! So I ended up rocking a new look which by me not putting any of that shit on my hair after it had already been chemically treated gave me a way more fuller look. It just looked like I had a perm. But no drips or wet look at all. My hair always grew really fast so I just grew that curl shit out. Other brothers were always asking me how did I get my shit like that. Vainandy can attest to this being that he's seen the footage of me at the premire of the Purple Rain movie. My shit was booming!

Hmm Interesting. As for myself, I never had to experience any Jeri curl products simply due to the fact that I have virgin natrually curly hair since birth. Since, people assume that this is not possible for some Black people to have this kind of hair, they continue to ask if I have a curl or what am I mixed with which is interesting question considering that when you go to my family reunion its like the United Nations. And when the straighter style came in like the wrap then, I started using relaxer to make it more straighter. Throughout the years, as I stated before on the org, I've rocked every hair style imaginable from my hair being shaved off one side, braids to spikes . Needless to say, I'm every women balled up into one and you wouldn't have any other way batting eyes. Of course to you wink and some of the regulars at the Org, my exploits in grade school ,college, and my job is old news.

that sounds hot to me. i liked when the jheri curl was more in a nu wave way. not so much like the compton eazy e. look ya dig?! that was probably for the best that you didn't rock the activator in it. seriously though since the 80's are back in a huge way i wonder if it will make a come back. that would be such a trip. i want a red leather ,michael jackson jacket too! cool
