Phil's drumming, his voice, his songwriting... very good stuff... the pop part of the group. Plus, he was very likeable and funny.

Peter Gabriel is a little more interesting. His voice (gawd, that voice!), his writings and demeanor back in the 80's... plus those animated/claymation videos. Then there's "Shock The Monkey" with that freaky video. He was the more artistic one...and his work with Kate Bush 2... gotta love him!

Mike + The Mechanics... they had a good debut album, "The Living Years" etc..., but not much since.

Genesis, both the Peter years and the Phil years were great. U could always count on the band 4 a great pop album with good hooks and vocals.

I agree with you for the most part. I think Phil's solo career really took a nosedive in '85 however. I mean I'll admit, some of his music after that was good, but so much of it was just cheesy and kinda stale. But there's usually a decent song from him here and there, such as "Everyday" from his Both Sides album. His career though is pretty much dead now, and I don't expect to hear much from him. It doesn't take away the fact that he had two great albums from '81 (Face Value) and '83 (Hello, I Must be Going) and a handful of great songs (Easy Lover with Philip Bailey, In the Air Tonight, etc.)

Mike and the Mechanics didn't do much as far as a great album, but they had three really good singles- The Living Years, All I Need is a Miracle, and Silent Running. Those singles were enough for me to consider Mike Rutherford an accomplished songwriter. Like you said, he disappeared after '89.

Peter Gabriel is interesting. I'm in between on him. I have his Us album, which contains a few good tracks. Shock the Monkey was cool, as well as the entire So album. Heard his new single last night, it was ok. He may not be the best songwriter when compared to Phil, but he's far more artistic.

Genesis was a good band. I couldn't really get into their stuff before '78. It's just too abstract, everything sounds like an epic, but the music doesn't really go anywhere. They had many great pop singles from '78 to '93 though. I always thought their song "Misunderstanding" sounded just like "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Sly.

Anyway, I think all of these groups/people are pretty much a thing of the past, unfortunately. Peter Gabriel's new album will probably fizzle out never to be heard from again after a couple of months, as well. We have to make room for the latest image-driven crap, you understand...

I think that "Home By The Sea" was Phil Collins at his best..

I never liked much of Genesis of mid to late 80s. They were much more ... watered down, with a few exceptions. Dug some of their 70s music. But Phil Collins the solo artist never interested me. Peter Gabriel...now that guy has got some brilliant solo work.

Someone was telling me to get the double album by Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway...haven't done it yet. But I've heard good things about it from a few different folks.

Peter Gabriel always said that it was a tribute to the soul music that he loved when he was a teenager...
Another that I admire about him is that he talked about politics in his songs (like "Biko) when it was risky for his career (his american record compagny deleted this song from his album then)

I absolutely LOVE their song "Missed Again".

I never knew the group when they were "GENESIS". however, i love the group now. phil collins great. like daryl hall, he couldnt make it on his own, but thats cool... they did slow down... lets get some more from these great musicians!
