You know im seriously hating this "Grestest" motif in pop culture,
i mean what does it matter anyway.
saying one or the other doesn't mean a thing because it will forever
only be an Opinion.
Theres no way to tell whos the more relevent artist unless you categorize a worldwide poll.

christ just letitgo

i just want to know what did elvis do that was so great... ?????

I don't like Elvis but i will always give credit when its due
he was one of the first cats to bring black music to the mainstream, fusing rock & roll with country
The first artist brave enough to break the prudency barrier in music and pop culture
He broke the doo wop stigma and started swiveling his hips like his black influencers, becoming one of the first Sex Symbols in america
He was indeed the quitessential performer, even the great Jackie Wilson admits black entertainers followed in elvis's footsteps
He wrote his own songs which were hits, played several instruments, and in the latterday of his career began producing his own albums,

I don't like Elvis, but music would not be the same without him,
Without Elvis, no Jackie Wilson, and quite possibly no Michael Jackson
the man gets my props

But hey he brought it out and thats all that matters.
you can't blame him because he's white, or you're just as racist as the folks who bought his albums in those times.

lololololololol who are those people... i think i know who clive davis is...

my problem is people giving credit to elvis when it goes to MJ....
MJ actually earned what he got... elvis was just given that title...
if his old music was that great... why at one point in his life people didn't even recognize him when he walked down the street.....

so what makes him special... other then he helped blacks music:-o

You not knowing them, means you're input is irrelvent to this discussion.
Cause you know nothing about music history girl,
i suggest to heed the others advice, and stop talking about things you don't know about.

Cause outside of your opinion. Michael Jackson is not the be all to music history.
He's good but he aint that good.
Michael Jackson might also be the catalyst to why music is horrible these days.
Michael iis the video king and and because of him and a few other 80's icons, Looks became superior to talent.
but im done skoolin for the day

To TotalAlisa: Clive Davis a record producer and executive, and one responsible for the success of Whitney Houton among others -- as you already know.

And yes, I agree with you that Michael Jackosn has had much more of an impact across races, nationalities, and cultures than Elvis Presley. You do not need to take a worldwide poll to figure out who is more well-known and influential. It is that obvious. But the latter was also a great singer and performer -- two things that none of us can deny. Is he overrated? Perhaps. Is Michael Jackson overrated? Perhaps by his fanbase. I cannot say he is by the media, since he is no longer their darling. In fact, I would argue that he is underrated, but let us not go there.

As for MJ, Madonna (and even Prince), and others of the MTV era being responsible for the emphasis of looks over talent. Perhaps. Perhaps not. I do not want to give them that much credit. wink

Since the 1950s, the impact on American and world culture of Elvis Presley - singer and music icon has been recognized.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, "it was Elvis who made rock 'n' roll the international language of pop." A PBS documentary described Presley as "an American music giant of the 20th century who single-handedly changed the course of music and culture in the mid-1950s."[1] His recordings, dance moves, attitude and clothing came to be seen as embodiments of rock and roll. His music was heavily influenced by African-American blues, Christian gospel, and Southern country.

Presley sang both hard driving rockabilly, rock and roll dance songs and ballads, laying a commercial foundation upon which other rock musicians would build their careers. African-American performers like Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry came to national prominence after Presley's acceptance among mass audiences of White American teenagers. Singers like Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and others immediately followed in his wake. John Lennon later observed, "Before Elvis, there was nothing."

elvis was *it* for many generations...was he as big (or bigger) then mj? hell yeah...but the media market was totally different. does that take away from mj? hell no.

will there ever be another elvis, mj, madonna, bruce, beatles or even prince? not with today's multi-media platform all fighting for individuals attention and money.

i have never been an elvis fan...my mum used to make my brother and i watch his movies on sunday afternoons (sunday's were family days...well, they were my mom's day to make us clean and watch elvis movies) and the excitement and pleasure my mum and her generation got from elvis is comparable to that of mj's and others from the 80's.

am i going to dismiss elvis' legacy because of political correctness or out of my own fandom for the artist *i* appreciate? nope.

Again TotalAlisa, you really don't get the gist of what I was posting. Ah, the ignorance of some - I said some - youth...

As I said before, you can't speak for a race. This goes beyond some defense about Michael Jackson. When you're trying to make a point, unless you have CONCRETE evidence, you cannot make a generalization - especially about a race of people - without backing it up. But you're in such a rush to defend your Michael Jackson fixation you're not seeing the forest for the trees.

I don't expect you to understand where I'm coming from, though... confused
