I repeat that joint every time it plays! Just wanna get on down when that joint plays!!! Marvin played funky keyboard on this and I believe he was also on the drums. I could tell because the beat was so Marvin's anyway. Again kudos to Trevor Lawrence on sax.

Yeah, I think he did because I checked the credits of the album online and Marvin's the only one listed as having played drums on it. Wouldn't surprise me, he played drums AND piano on his early hit "Hitch Hike" so it's possible to play both drums and keyboards on a single track, in Marvin's case, every song on the album. Did you know Marvin played drums on most of the early Motown hits ("Shop Around", "Please Mr. Postman", "Fingertips")? Plus there's a cool part in Marvin's Montreux '80 performance where he played the battle of the drummers between him and the drummer of his band, it was actually percussion Marvin was playing though. The drummer had a funky beat and Marvin just meshed in. He played extremely well considering he was playing the drums up front, lol.

The only downside to this album (listening to it present day) are the synth sounds being used.
(which give some tracks a rather dated quality) The melodies/grooves save most of them though. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I too have seen that Montreux performance and that drum showdown was spellbinding. I have to get that his Montreux CD and DVD soon! I neva, however, knew that Marvin was the session on most of those early Motown smashes. Wow! [Edited 8/11/07 14:29pm] Check me out and add me on:

His real name is... ...Clarence Reid. Initially was a successful staff writer/producer/musician for TK Records and wrote these recognizable tunes... Betty Wright - Baby Sitter, Clean Up Woman Gwen McCrae - Rockin' Chair KC and The Sunshine Band - Sound Your Funky Horn ...among many others. He's even got a co-writing credit on Beyonce's Upgrade U. For some unknown reason in 1971 he started doing X-Rated tunes using... ...Blowfly as his alter-ego. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. He/she was probably confused by the In Our Lifetime or Let's Get It On or I Want You or What's Going On deluxe editions because as far as I know there's no deluxe edition to Trouble Man unless he/she bought the remastered version. Well, it almost happened in 2005. There were really only a handful of Trouble Man outtakes and the powers that be didn't really feel they warranted a deluxe edition. To compensate for the lack of outtakes, there were plans to release the special edition remastered with the original LP & the handful of outtakes on disc one. Disc two was planned to be the DVD of the movie... unfortunately there were already plans to re-release the film on DVD in early 2006. The Here My Dear Special Edition is planned for release later this year.

But the way he produced it was so sublime you almost don't notice.

For real! It's probably the best f**k you, break-up album ever made. Screw Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. I mean, this was, and still is the real thing because it came from the tortured soul from one of the most brilliant, yet troubled soul men, in all his flawed glory. The melodies are simple and jazzy, the mood is lush, fearful and gloomy, and even when Marvin is stoned on drugs here, he is still straight on. Listen to that line he screams in When Did I Stop Loving You, When Did You Stop Loving Me: Do you remember, All of the ... BULLSHIT, BABY?!". This is definitely Marvin's second magnum opus, next to What's Going On. This is what REAL soul music is all about. I'm glad it's getting the deluxe treatment sometime this year! Check me out and add me on:
