Jamie Lidell - Prince ripoff or capturing the essence? Who's heard Jamie Lidell's "When I Come Back Around" from his Multiply CD?
Is it a straight up ripoff of Prince's early 80s sound or just borrowing the vibe of that era? You can listen to it HERE and decide.

First of all, thank you for making threads that have nothing to do with Michael Jackson. I wondered what happened to Mis-teeq. ![]() I love this album and the first time I heard it there were bits that sort of reminded me of Minneapolis, no particular Prince song that I could put my finger on but the bass and some percussion scream early P. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

The song definitly sounds like it came from the 80's era. Personnally,it sounds nothing like Prince at all. ![]()

I think "When i come back around" is an awesome track - reminds me more of The Time in it's roughness while being incredibly funky.

Jamie is the bomb! He should've been the chosen one to lead the Blue-eyed Soul category these days since he's the best singer out of all of them (Justin, Robin, Adam, Joss, etc.). But "Multiply" got slept on and now it's just a cult favorite.
Yeah I can hear the Prince influence, but it's not a ripoff. Especially since Jamie puts his Techno-geek spin on the track and makes it his own. You should see him do this live. It's amazing. ![]() I hope his next album gets more attention. He's totally worthy of it. [Edited 8/10/07 12:45pm] NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I think Jamie is good. I can hear the Prince compairsons, but I don't think he tries to be Prince (musically that is). I really love "What's The Use". **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Without blowing my own trumpet I think I was the 1st person on the Org to discover Jamie Lidell. This was back in 2003 when after I'd seen a set of his at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. The album barely touches the surface and is rather safe compared to his live show. Personally I think his live show has got less daring since the albums release.
Jamie wears his influences on his sleeve for sure and the Prince comparison is inevitable. He is a self confessed Prince fan and he even sang 'Forever In My Life' during that said live show. His live show is awesome in that he builds the songs and show out of layering his voice-ie. beat boxin', singing, screaming, wailing to create something funky and most importantly it usually works. To get the real sense of what Jamie is more about you need to go beyond 'Multiply'. Look out for his collaborations with his peers-Mocky ('In The Mean Time', 'I Cant See You'), Shapemod ('Superfreak'-very indusive of Lidell's live show) and as part of the duo that is Super_Collider with Christian Vogel. I think Prince fan's would also enjoy Snax's music who toured with Jamie Lidell in the States last year. There's Joy In Expatriation.
