Carlos Santana discusses his upcoming projects Billboard article (7/13/07)---
Three new songs will be featured on the Santana retrospective "Ultimate Santana",due Oct.16 via Arista. They include a Shakira/Lil Wayne collaboration that has yet to be named,an "infectious" rocker penned by and featuring Nickelback's Chad Kroeger titled "Into The Night" and a new version of the 2002 Michelle Branch-featuring hit "The Game Of Love" with vocals by Tina Turner. "We got a Grammy with Michelle, and Michelle brought her own spirit and her own innocence and purity," Santana tells Billboard, adding that Turner was the intended guest on the cut,but that label politics got in the way."However, when you hear these notes that Tina hits, every hair on your body stands up." As for "Into The Night",Santana says it has that "kind of chant in a coliseum when your team is ahead, like "We Will Rock You".I am very grateful that Chad has shared it with me." Next up on Santana's agenda is a double-disc set tentatively titled "Multi-Dimensional Warrior," which will be out next spring.Says the artist,"I took like six or seven CDs from the past that I felt never really got heard in between 'Abraxas' and 'Supernatural' and I compiled this flow of songs." Santana has recorded some new guitar parts for the effort, which he describes as "a love letter to the fans". Also in the works is a potential collaboration with producer Bill Laswell dubbed "Free Will" and music Santana has earmarked for use in conjunction with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."I'm writing music that will hopefully put us center stage with our African brothers there," he says. And after an extended break from the road,Santana is ready to resume touring."We're going to start possibly in Dubai and then work our way to New Zealand and Australia and Hong Kong around February or March," he reveals."I feel much younger.I feel much more vibrant.I have much more energy.I'm glad I took the time to replenish."

I can see working with SHakira on a track but LIL WAYNE, good lord why do people work with this guy, easily one of the worst rappers ever. DISC ONE- Let There Be Light Brotherhood Spirit Right Now Life Is For Living Saja/Right On (featuring Larry Graham) Somewhere In Heaven I Believe It's Time Serpents And Doves Your Touch I'll Be Waiting The River Bellando/Aquatic Park Praise DISC TWO- Curacion (Sunlight On Water) Aqua Marine Bella Love Is You Full Moon Blues Latino Samba Pa Ti Europa El Farol En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor Luz Amor Y Vida I Love You Much Too Much Blues For Salvador Victory Is Won a somewhat more satisfying compilation than "Ultimate Santana".This one rejects the big hits in favor of forgotten album tracks. There's also a handful of recent rarities, such as "Serpents and Doves" and "Curacion (Sunlight On Water)".I think this set will appeal more to the hardcore fans.

I'll most likely get both of these.
I'm relatively 'low' on Santana material.

I'm relatively 'low' on Santana material. Do you have some of his 70s albums? Those albums are essential!

It pisses me off that they didn't release this version in the first place.Carlos says it was record company politics, but I think that Clive Davis insisted on a younger,"hotter" artist to sing it All he sees is dollar signs.

I have Volume 1,but never got Volume 2.It's unnecessary for me,since I have all his albums anyway
There are too many Santana compilations on the market.I'd be more interesed in having a compilation of outtakes,or a live box set featuring his 70s concerts.

I've long been a fan of Santana, but since 'Supernatural' (which was ok for a one-off), he's just not released anything I want to buy.
He's been talking for the last few years about releasing a cool sounding new instrumental jazz-rock album in the style of mid-late '70s Santana. I even heard it was recorded, and was called 'Hymns'. But he never seems to release it. I think this project then somehow became a one-off concert in Montreaux with the likes of Wayne Shorter (the Wayne he should recording with), John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Dennis Chambers. I also know there's been a recent live DVD of Santana with Shorter and co., but that was made in 1988-ish, so it's old if interesting. But what do we get for new releases? Yet more back-catalogue recycling and collabs with 'musical giants' like Shakira and Lil Wayne (whoever he is - out of touch Miles ). Carlos Santana, a man who led some great incarnations of the Santana band, and recorded with so many greats from Booker T to Alice Coltrane ... He promises good new things but seems to release mediocre stuff nowadays. Disapointed again. On the strength of this, I'm not holding my breath for a 'possible' Bill Laswell collab album. That could be good, given Laswell and Santana's similar taste in collaborators. But no doubt, some money-spinning collab with the recetnly reformed Spice Girls will intrude on these plans. He needs to get back in touch with his Deva-dip Oneness. [Edited 8/9/07 12:14pm]

Eversince I saw him as a child perform on the Woodstock film Black Magic Woman, I've Been Hooked. Santana is one of the legends still in the game no doubt.

I agree,I'm sick of all these pop collaborations.I didn't even listen to his last CD 'All That I Am' very much.Played it for a few days then got sick of it.I'm tired of hearing pop artists on his albums, making Carlos seems like a guest guitarist on his own album! I don't really blame Carlos though....he's signed to Arista and we all know how Clive Davis operates. He only sees dollar signs That's why Carlos is having a hard time releasing that instrumental album.
